I am coming to the september class and was wondering several things:

Is the WebPath CD required the first semester and what volume is it?

Am I required to have a microscope the first couple semesters and if so can I get anything else besides the Accuscope 2003?

I just bought a 50 watt converter will that be good enough?

Can I use something else besides the Littmann stethoscope? I know a doctor that is willing to let me use his.

On the BIG order form it says that I need a clinical short lab coat. Do I need to get a long coat for the White Coat Ceremony and where do I get it at? I also read somewhere that I needed either 2 scrubs or 2 lab coats for the labs. Is this true?

Can I get the economy clinical equipment elsewhere?

Any suggestions on housing with a/c, one room? Are all of the housing units hurricane safe?

Your answers are greatly appreciated

No, the WebPath CD was accidentally placed on the list by the bookstore and does not belong there for 1st semester students. WebPath is not on the list that the University published. I have verified this.

Yes, you are required to have a microscope for histology. Some students do fine without one, and some students would tell you not to get one at all, but its up to you. I feel you will learn more if you look at your slides at home. You can buy a used scope for a lot less if you want to.

NO, a 50watt converter won't be good for much. But don't buy any more before you get here. The useful ones are VERY heavy and you don't know if you'll even need ANY transformers yet.

Yes, you can use ANY stethoscope you want. But what is your doctor friend going to do without his? just kidding.

Yes, you can buy the equipment anywhere you want.

There are hundreds of one room apartments with Air Conditioning. Yes, almost every apartment is cement and ready for a hurricane.

You need the SHORT clinic jacket for the white coat ceremony. You can also buy that anywhere you want.

You don't need scrubs until 2nd semester.

Hope this helps!

MitchDC alludes to it but I am going to say it. Converters are not good for much. They are only to be used with low wattage motors, such as electric razors. Tourists usually get them for traveling in foreign countries where a 110 razor may not work on the 220 system. You NEVER want to plug electronics into a converter.

For your purposes, you should use a transformer. With a surge protector, you can safely plug electronics into them. Of course you can plug any electrical device into them as long as you do not exceed 75% of the transformers capacity, e.g. a 100 watt transformer can accommodate a 75 watt load.

you said that converters are not good for much. So I will not need to have a converter at all. My wife will be using a blow dryer and curling iron, will a transformer do? What kind of transformer should I get and where can I purchase one?

Most blow dryers are 1200-1500 watts. A converter will not work for this. I don't think it will be good for a curling iron, either. Don't know the wattage on 'em, but I am sure they use more than 50 watts. :?

i bought a traveler's blow dryer that has 110 and 220v settings. you should have her buy one of those. I don't know if the curling iron has two settings are not. If you buy a transformer that is 3000W, then she can plug the blower dryer in one of those since i think the highest it goes up to now is 1875w. as to where you can get transformers. I suggest you come here and then purchase one. It's very heavy and will limit the amount of things you can bring with you over here. Like mitch said above, you can get it at best buy, muslim store etc. I think the best deal is at best buy. my roommate and I bought a 1500w for 125EC, which is about $46US. I don' t know how much the 3000W is though.

What size do you need for a laptop computer. Can more than one item be plugged into the transformer such as computer, printer, light etc?

THanks!

Singer, it all depends on the wattage of the things you plan to plug into it. Your computer is very low wattage but a microwave or a toaster are VERY high wattage. It all depends on what you plug into it. Check on your devices.

Can you possibly tell me what medical insurance you have and how much it costs, if you do not mind.
