In order to get students back to the States as soon as possible and back to experience US clinical medicine, Ross University has established its 5th semester in Miami. Students get introductory clinical experiences in US hospitals, do case studies, get BLS/ACLS/HIPPA certified, perfect the physical exam, and prepare for the USMLE Step 1 by learning better to integrate things and improve their clinical thinking. The course is called Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine.

SGU has a similar course in St. Vincent, Caribbean. AUC in St. Martin, Caribbean. St. Matthews, ibid (or Maine if you opt for the Masters).

There are 3 sems every sch yr. Spring (Jan- Apr), Summer (May- Aug) and Fall (Sep- Dec). Unlike US schs that give summer vacations and only 2 sems per yr.

So thats 4 semesters on the island then? (16 months?)

Do caribbean medschools go at a more relaxed rate than US schools?

How are the extra summer semesters balanced out?

there are 3 sems a year.
each sem is 14wks long
comes out to 42wks in total .
One year has 52wks....so 52-42=10wks left over.
so you get about 3wks vacation in between sems.

As for the material...RUSM definately goes much faster, especially anatomy and second sem. By third and fourth sem you are pretty much acusstomed to keeping pace.

But i think someone on the island right now should comment on the pace, because i think they have changed around the curriculum a bit since i was there.

Thanks for clearing up the vacation time issue, but can anyone contrast the US medschools' timelines with the Caribbean ones? I know US schools (at least the majority) operate on 2 sems/yr, do they also leave the last 2 years for clinicals? Again how do the extra caribbean semesters balance out?

Basic Sciences:

US schools go two semesters per year with the regular summer break.

Caribbean schools go three semesters per academic year with 2-3 weeks between semesters.

Clinical Sciences:

US Schools go straight through without real summer breaks.

Caribbean schools go straight through without scheduled breaks.

Therefore, you can finish all your academic and clinical clerkships in LESS than 4 years. Most Caribbean students take extra time off to study for the board exams which them evens it all out.
