Hello,
I am looking for anyone in Pakistan who might be able to help me out. I am recent high school graduate from the States who has set my goal on becoming an MD through the Pakistan MBBS system. I have been referred to the Khyber Medical College (University of Peshawar) by family who have graduated from there, so naturally this college would be my first preferrence. But I have been searching through the web with dead ends , the website to the college has not been updated and I'm having trouble getting into contact with the administration at the school.
Does anybody know if the admission for this year is still open and when the entrance exam will be conducted? Also if anybody is aware when exactly do the official classes begin for this year batch at KMC-- someone told me Novemeber but thats only hearsay.
any thoughts or information would be appreciated.
thank-you.

Salam friend,
Well I'm not a pakistani student, but Ithink I can help u and answer some of ur questions...
You see...its better to apply as a forgeiner so that way u wont need to give an entrance exam... or u can go to pak right now and apply there in person but then u would have to give an entrance exam...Iheard the entrance exam is on october 2 but its just a rumor.... so dont think its true but what I do know for sure is that it will take place sometimes in october and yeah Ithink u might be right about school starting near november/dec...
Also I think u can still apply now but u dont have much time, either go to ur nearest pak embassy to pick up the application and submit it asap !!! or go to pak soon so u can apply from there....I know u want to apply to khyber, and this school is a government medical college therefore when ur applying ...ur applying to all the government medical college with one application but in the application u can write as "khyber" been ur first choice...and then based on ur marks from high school and (if u write the entrance exam) they will put u in a med college. Good marks= they will take ur choice... bad marks= then its THEIR choice... so u never know where u'll end up....its all part of ur "kismet" ;)
Hope this answered some of ur questions..if u still got more ...dont worry PM me or post them up and inshalla someone will get back to u....
Soooo hurry and start applying!!!! :) Wish u all the BEST!!!

i also tried to get into khyber medical college, but as i wrote in another post i didnt have physics A-level, although i had physics o-level...if i knew before i would have taken physics then no problem, but in UK its not a requirement.
I wouldnt trust embassies of pakistan, as they are just a joke. they dont do any work and just speak..best thing is go there yourself, and ask around.
As a foreign student you dont need to take an entrance exam, all you need to do is pay money and have to go IBCC for equivalence of your college grades.
I just came back from peshawar, and the uni i think starts in late october or even earlier than that...a private school which is getting quite popular and is recognised is gandahara uni in peshawar..then other alternatives for nearby peshawar is abbotabad (ayub medical college) and a private one is frontier medical college.
Anybody know clearly about the transfer procedure of this uni and others in Pakistan. like if you want to transfer into second year from a european uni...what i find with Pakistan is that they are very stubborn and not flexible. they talk about following the west in useless things, but the good stuff they dont want to follow..

hey Hkhan,
In my opinon....Its better if u give your application to the pakistani embassy in your area (US/Can/UK) because that way your application will get process cuz the embassy will be responsible if something happens to ur application. You see I have send my application throught the pak embassy and the EAD ppl told me they have recieved it. I heard if u send ur applicaion directly to the EAD or to the IBCC then yeah it gives them the chance to make excuses like "oh sorry we lost ur application or we havn't recieved it!". Also I find it safe if your applying through the pak embassy cuz lets say (God forbid) a war starts in Pakistan....if your American, Canadian or British citizen then ur country will know ur in Pakistan and they will make sure to get you out of there safely! thats one the benefit of apply through the pak embassy.
Also if you go to pak ur self then u have to stuggle with the pakistani ppl...and we all know how they are....;)
So I think its better for everyone to apply from pak embassies....
Also about getting transfered from a european uni to a pak uni I think you should contact the pak uni and tell them about ur situation and ask them if they can let u...
By the way did u go to pak to apply to pak med schools?? also did u try applying to any private ones maybe since ur saying u dont have physics they might take u...usually if u show them money they are willing to bend there rules a little...;)

yea you are right in what you are saying, i went to Pakistan and not one single university allowed even a slight chance for me to get in, whether that be by me taking an entrance exam, more money, take physics along with medicine, etc....they are so inflexible, they dont move on what they say...so im clueless as to what will make them consider my application.
Like i am in UK, i got AAB in my a-levels second time..in UK now its difficult for retakes to get into medicine, so my first choice was Pakistan, but due to this physics thing now that choice has gone...so ill have to go into europe (czech republic)..as it is a 6 year course, and not the same atmosphere as Pakistan, i want to transfer after 1 year..but then i heard their rules are you can only transfer into 3rd year, the only hope was one private medical school in peshawar..but nothing is guaranteed, i was hoping i could get a transfer into khyber medical college..so its quite confusing.
I would have gone Pakistan last year, but because they are so backward minded, they just keep saying oh you dont have physics so there is no way you can get in..
so are you a medical student in which country?

Thanks Sara for the info. Right now I am in PK, applied directly to the school and also visited the campus in Peshawar. I am in the process of getting my grades accredited from IBCC Islamabad. The admission director at KMC told me that most of the foreign students who apply get admission as long as they have completed the prerequistes (bio, chem, physics and english) in their native country. So that was reassuring. But still not clear when exactly the classes will begin.
Hkan,
I'd suggest you try other colleges in the private sector cause most of them are lenient towards foreigners. There are many especially in Punjab and Sindh. good luck.

so HKHAN because Pakistani schools want prerequisites completed ,they are BACKWARD????????/ amazing really. This means all legit schools are backward according to your definition.

so mat09...have u ever been to pakistan? well let me tell u one thing about Pakistan. In Pakistan... with $$$$ + relation = one can achieve ANYTHING!!! ;) ...so keeping that in mind according to Hkhan's definition of "backward" he is right because u see... every year some students get into pak med schools just by giving good money that means no prerequisites, no entry exam, just $$$ + relation! So that's why his definition does make sense...
....if you were in his position...only then you would understand...

how did you find the campus and facilities?

It's not hard to find campus/facilities if you have relatives in Pakistan. Otherwise you can go to the websites of the various colleges. I think the King Edward Medical College site is kemc.com.

Because Pakistani schools are unjust and dont have any flexibility at all, it shows backwardness...even some universities elsewhere have backward approach, which is that they hassle you over useless things while forgetting the main things. Pakistani schools say without physics you have no CHANCE of getting in, ok i would say if that was for government schools only, but its private schools as well.
What is the only private recognised uni??? AGHA KHAN...now this uni has some flexibility with physics or mathematics (again strange coz maths, it should be any subject, coz what has maths got to do with physics) but anyway better than the stance of other unis...Now why is it agha khan is trying to take over the education system, pakistan govt. says his standard is good, they wish to follow the west, yet the government unis allow agha khan to have this requirement but not other unis? its about money and connections..

Salam all,
Well Hkhan, I know having physics as a requirement for government colleges might sound ridiculous, but the truth of the matter is, even in the United States, you can't get into a medical school without physics. It's tested on the MCAT. Therefore, to call Pakistani government colleges backwards for requiring physics would be to call American schools backwards.
The reasons these schools require physics isn't because you need physics to become a good doctor. It just helps them choose qualified candidates. By learning only biology and chemistry, you are limiting your range in sciences. These schools want students with broadened interests and who can tackle a wide range of academic fields. Physics, in this sense, is just a test to see if you can handle it.
Finally, I do agree that there is a degree of corruptness in the education system. However, please get your facts/opinions right about where it is. Having physics as a requirement is by no means evidence of such corruption; it's a requirement in other countries as well.

salam friend,
There are two ways u can study in pakistan. In government med schoools or private med schools. Government med schools are school such as King Edward, Allama Iqbal, Kybre, DOW, Ayub,Nishter etc.. and private ones are Aga Khan, Lahore medical and dental, Baquai, Shifa, etcc...
To apply to the private med schools u need to check out their website, if u intersted in Aga Khan the application is due on march 2, 2006, so u still got time to apply for that! check out www.aku.edu (http://www.aku.edu) go to application and u'll see there!
And for government med schools u need to go to ur nearest pak embasy and they will give u the aplication. The application has two parts, first u will need to convert ur marks from the IBCC place in pakistan and them submitt ur application to the EAD ppl (who wil give u admission).
Also checkout the "pakistani medical college" thread and u'll find sooo much info in there, and if u have any questions feel free to ask and inshalla I'll guide u well....
wish u all the best,
Sara

You can definetly get into a medical school in Pakistan with marks like that, even your choice! This current year admission has been closed so you would have to apply for the 2008-2009 year though but no worries about that.
Your first course of action would be to get your transcripts from your high school, a few official copies at least 5, and your diploma, copies of passport and your parents passports, and then head to an IBCC office in Pakistan and apply for an equivalence certificate. After that you will have everything you need to apply at the Higher Education Commission for admission. If you need more help let me know.
