Hi guys. I just found an apartment in jackson Heights in queens NY. I drove little over 1900 miles from Denver to get to this New york Empire.

I will start general surgery rotations from the flushing med center this tuesday.

first lesson from Metro NY..dont park anywhere 2 feets from fire hydrant or getting ticketed for $115 which I got today. I did not even see that there was this ugly 100 year old fire hydrant by my spot right acorss my aprtment entrance.

staying for one day and a half at a local motel (Cost $104 per night) where you dont even have free local calls but have to pay for it. After signing an decent aparmtent at $995 month -one bed and hard wood flooor and charming entrance and walk up and decent neighbors- I was so relived from the last a week long tension and scary moment and from 4 days of grueling road trip that I slept for 10 hours in my new empty apartment floor.

initinally I was searching for an apartment at around $870 month but they came out to be rat holes where you seen in the movie " the mimics".

Anyway, if you guys coming over NY for clinicals..dont hesitate to ask me for some tips and help. If necessary I will go and pick you guys up and possibly you can stay in my place until you find your apartment.

I used Rental-direct.com which came out to be real and I was able to elimnaite middle man agent but deal with my landlords directly to save $ 2000. make sure that you bring your cell phone and if possible a car so you could shop round for an apatment.

So far, I did not get any support from the hospital or AUC clinical in terms of getting to NY And finding my place. the support was literally none.

Hope when I get the residency it would be better treatment.

Anyway, New york is not a place to live but it is a short pass by for acheving my goal.

Dont I love NY..?

take care guys..

Hello Ken,

Glad to hear that you're safely(?) in NY...enjoy the weekend and good luck in Surgery!

Aloha,

Jone and Speros, it good to hear from you gentlemen. Hope you two and family are doing great too.

I am learning bit of New York like daily now from how to park to where to shop for foods and where to avoid toll bridges. Roosevelt avenue bridge is free and its right down from my place. so I am fortunate to not to pay for 6$ per crossing such as George washinton bridge. I hear many new yorkers pay nearly $ 200 month to cross one of the many NY bridges.

What the heck do they do that in addition to unnecessay traffic congestions of everage 35 minutes or more due to brutally slow and long line by the toll gate by those bridges? Is there any more intelligent way of collecting toll beside that pathetic pre paid cards which also cause congestions?

lose of work time 35 minutes X 1 million commnuters montly means huge 35 billion minutes and beyond plus huge amount of nasty emission due to idle engines for each of 35 minutes daily for 31 daysX2 by way home back by millions times of emissions. its totally nonsese economically and environmentally as well as mential and physcial health concerns of citizens.

Politicians dont have much brain cells but accute sense of business and greedy heart. and business people have too much brain cells but no sense of ethics. its always bad combinations that runs NY city.

I hope medical community is different from these two groups.

Speros. drop me a line when you come to NY so I will help as I promised.

take care guys

ah yes ken, welcome to life in a city...you ever wonder why i hated chicago so much? there you go, same crap different skyline. anyway you should have known that the school has almost no support for you in terms of housing etc. weren't you in sxm for two years?...hehe on their behalf though it would be difficult to place every single student and hand hold them to their new apartment, specialy in the big cities that have no real organized apartment complexes and its just a mass of individual landlords so all be warned, you were adventurous and had the drive to go to an island for 2 years, its not too far of a stretch of the imagination that you will be able to handle looking in a newspaper or the internet a month or two before rotations to find a place.

if it makes you feel any better those southern sites you keep wanting weren't much better in terms of helping you find a place, though traffic was better...

keep on going ken, just becareful riding a bike

Make that SIX feet - my car was once TOWED to a far and remote place in the upper west side and it cost me over $300 to get my car back. You don't want to park anywhere near those hydrants, even the obviously non-working ones.

that sucks. but 300 dollars is almost like the going rate for parking in NYC anyways. :D
