Hey,
Just for any of you January or May prospects coming from NYC, I thought I'd post instructions on getting the police clearance letter and save you the nightmare I've endured.

Forget the idea that you're going to walk into your local precinct in a starched shirt and smile and hand them the form letter that Saba provides. I did that with 3 different precincts and pretty much just got laughed at. Finally, one cop who actually deserves his pay said "oh, what you need is a good conduct letter, but you gotta go to Police Plaza for that."

So head down to One Police Plaza (N or R train to City Hall, then ask a cop where to go). Have a money order in the amount of $30 with you, they don't take any other form of payment. As with all New York City agencies, expect to stand in line and be treated like dirt by the "public servants" who are one generation out the trees.

Have your passport with you, hand them the money order, they'll bark at you to sit down, and give you no indication of what you're waiting for or how long it will take. Of course, as you sit there you'll convince yourself that you do actually have a summons out for your arrest (remember that parking ticket you thought you'd paid). Forty minutes later someone will bark your name and lead you back to a fingerprinting machine where they'll talk on a cell phone in a foreign language as they fingerprint you. Then they'll hand you a receipt, and tell you to come back 12 days later.

You'll go back in 12 days, wait another 40 minutes until they bark your name again, and they'll hand you a sheet with a copy of your fingerprints, and if you're lucky, they'll have ticked the box that says something like "no criminal activity." So much for the nicely worded template that Saba gave you.

Anyway, if you're from NYC, you're used to dealing with crappy agencies. Remember that you'll be going through one or two metal detectors and bring:
-a pen
-the money order for $30 (there's a bank a block away that'll charge $8 for a money order)
-your passport

Good luck!
Bigguy

Salutations "bigguy":

Wow, sorry to hear about your bad experience in obtaining a police clearance. I am from Los Angeles, and had no problem whatsoever obtaining mines. It took approximately 3 minutes to complete the entire ordeal, and I paid $3 for it too. Hey, at least you got what you came for, right? Ciao.

I could not help but laugh while reading your post. But in reality, I can relate and think it's very sad to see the quality of civil servants this city attracts. (or should I say accepts) I have yet to meet one that will actually help the public without an annoying level of attitude and ignorance.

Have a safe trip to the Island... and good luck with getting that 140lb worth of luggage through WA.

Hi, i am from Ontario, Canada. I went to my local police station where they referred me to the head office to get my clearance. Once at the head office i was informed b the secratary that there were 2 kinds of clearance

1. general clearance, takes 10 minutes to do, cost $25 dollars, and is good for most purposes.

2. the detailed one, takes about $50, and 2 weeks to perform. its a record search with the interpol to make sure i am not wanted anywhere else for criminal activity, ths is reccomended specially for ppl who are going to work, unsupervised, with minors.

funny thign is every where i went i had to talk to secrateries in civil cloths, didn't have to talk to any cops.

but i can relate with your experience in USA. When i was young and foolish and lived int he border area of Alberta, me and by buddy one night wondered off (?) and crossed the US border by accident. needless to say, the harassed us quiet a bit while keeping an official tone ( not to be confused with official mannerism) and put both our names on some sorta list. so every time i have to cross the border, i get pulled out side the line.

I got my letter from a rural Texas area, and it took me over a month for them to figure out how to do it...but hey, it was free! You'll experience more fun when (and if) you get a Saba drivers license, or get your car impounded for not having the right sticker on your license plate a couple of days after you bought it! There is always something...

i did my in less than 24 hrs, they even mailed it back to me free of charge (cool). well i must admit that i am not from NY and thanks that i did not have to go through that because i did my so late. so the key here is to do it as early as u can.
