Ive already read up on how devastating long distance relationships have been to caribbean med school students and their SO's but i havent found anything specific from LDR's in AUC. Is anyone leaving behind their SO? My SO will be leaving soon to attend there this fall and just wanted to have an idea how big of a challenge its gonna be for the both of us. THanks and gluck to all u new guys on ur first year of med school :)
PS. if ne one has any positive experiences w/ their LDR's please post!

My boyfriend of 5 years will be staying behind when I come down there in 2 days. We are both very upset about it. We both got webcams and he is planning on coming down every 4 months, and I will be going back during breaks, so we should see each other every 2 months. I'm hoping it will work. If not, he will just have to quit his job and join me down there :)

Yea my guy is planning to do the same thing...coming back home like every few months or so to maintain the relationship. I hope it works out for both of us and im trying to stay positive about this entire situation...although i heard there will definitely be very difficult times and such..im just trying to be realistic about everything and keep an open mind that there is a high chance that our relationship can falter

My fiancee is here with me right now, but she'll fly back to CA sunday. When your eally think about it, it's only 1.5 years of Long Distance (Clinical rotations we're planning to move together as she'll finish her MBA). So i guess in my situation, it doesn't sound as bad as it is. I think if both are dedicated, it wouldn't be a problem.
Just a thought...^^

if you don't already have it, get MSN Messenger, then all you need to see and talk to your SO is webcam and headphones with microphone built in (cheap at walmart or here on the island). The service is free.
Option #2 is to get something like vonage...if you set it up so that the call would be a local number for you to call it would be free to you and only cost your SO about $25 per month to be able to call anywhere in the US or Canada.
Good luck and best wishes.

My wife is staying home too. We got all the web cams running and everything else we need to stay in touch. She is gonna come down every break. But we've done this before.

I'm always way too optimistic on these things, but I think it can work. It of course depends upon the maturity of both of the parties in the relatioinship. I think if either of the two is prone to becoming too jealous/obsessive, then it is doomed to fail.
I have the unfortunate disposition of just having entered a relationship that is already long distance, and then trying to make it work with this school stuff thrown in. I really like the girl, but it seems inevitable that the relationship will fail. And that sucks cause its not like either one of us will have done anything bad (wait I thought I said I was optimistic?), it would just fail due to positions in life.
Stuff like that is hard to deal with, cause it seems like such a pointless reason. Then you fall into the "mistake" of trying to make it work, and you start doing stupid shit. "Oh, lets take out more loans, etc"..
I dunno..

Besides, as swimguy says, if you bring a SO with you it's a free dishwasher.

For people who do bring a SO with them, how do they support the SO? Is there enough with the med school loans to support 2 people? Is there work on the island for the SO? Thanks.

If you don't live in a place that rents for $2400/month or have a gambling/drug/platinum room addiction, there's plenty money for two.
SO can work on campus or find other jobs around town...just ask.

ALoha,
More than enough money... and if they do get a dinky job on the island (surprisingly easy to find) that can support the gambling habit. Like my wife's did. SOs... don't leave home without them.

is it feasible to fly home for a long weekend once during a semester? Do some people go home besides break time?
