Hi, does anybody have any information about setting an NIH research elective? Does the paperwork take a long time? Are there any special requirements for Ross Students? thanks!

Paperwork does not take a long time. NIH is used to processing this stuff. The key is finding an elective that interests you, apply, get approved by NIH, then have Ross do the paperwork. I'd start with your Ross clinical advisor first for advice on this - they deal with NIH regularly, cause they're an affiliate and there were several other rossies there when i was. I'd encourage folks to pursue this great opportunity available to Ross students.. for those interested in research... I had an extremely valuable experience there ..

are only those who are in the scholars program eligible to do any clinical rotation at the NIH? Or is this option available to everybody?

you fill this out, it takes them a while to process it, so give 'em plenty of time. preferrably do the application it 6-8 months in advance to the time you want to start.

so you dont have to be in the scholar/PACE program to be eligible to do an elective rotattion at the NIH

no, you do need to be a 4th year medical student at the time of your rotation. graduates cannot participate in the rotation, and the spots can be competitive given that only one student rotates per month for each rotation (to my knowledge).

I applied @ the beginning of this month to neurosurg, surg oncology, and head/neck surg here for July '08. They say apply several months in advance. They have positions starting every month. Check it out NIH Clinical Electives Program: Contents (http://www.training.nih.gov/student/cep/).

Still waiting on the wonderfully fast and efficient Ross to send them my transcripts...rest of the application has been complete...LOL
