ok a serious response---
i have not heard of a AUC student in my 3 semsters here being raped by locals or fellow students--
however there have been a few cases with students getting into heat exchanges with locals, locals threatening students, or home break in and robberies--
i actually looked in the student guide that listed the crimes against students--and they actually list since 1997 there has not be a reported case of rape or any sort of sexual assualt--
so i think in general if you take good precautions and safetly measures you should be ok here--

Two years on the island and haven't heard of any student being raped yet. It seems that St. Maarten has a disproportionately low rate of violent crimes against students. I'd be more worried about getting raped while on clinicals in New York City than here on the island.
p.s. Actually, I don't think SOE is actually a man or a woman... or a boy for that matter. He always reminded me of a 13 year old pre-pubescent girl. Certainly whines like one.

No, I like Jon's description better. But yeah, rape and murder are down on the list of bad things that can happen to you on St. Maarten. Up there might be getting robbed, or wedgied by upper classmen.

Long time reader, first time poster, however I think this is a good topic to weigh in on.
your concerns are valid, things to keep in mind:
in reviewing the crime data provided by the school, keep in mind that the geographic area encompassing their reporting is only the campus. Not the island.
St. Maarten has no real gross domestic product other than tourism, needless to say the government is attentive to things like crime which deter tourism. Currently crime is actually proportionally high and the notion of using the Dutch marines ( i think they're called Marchusses {sp}) has been suggested as a form of martial law.
On a positive note, there is a fairly strong rumor mill at the school that has a nack for emphasis on the negative and they're have been no assaultive crimes against students floating around. Petty larcenies are common, but can be avoided with an ounce of prevention.
Once established on the island it should be apparent, like any city, where the areas to avoid are.
Overall the campus and student housing in the immediate area is safe and mostly consists of students and locals who are doing general labor. I wouldn't let the fear of a horrific crime deter you from coming here.
Just for general information, here is a link to the local newspaper which gives a fairly good account of the crime happenings. www.thedailyherald.com (http://www.thedailyherald.com/)

Ross Student.
I was on the island between 2003-2005 and I didnt hear of any rape cases. I did hear of a girl being attacked late at night. But nothing too bad happened to her, i dont think she got raped. I feel bad for her and would not wish that upon any girl. The security is pretty tight on campus. one thing i recommend is that dont attract any attention to yourself especially late at night. How can you do that? dont wear revealing clothes at night, and dont wear jewelry that might attract the attention of the locals and dont be all loud and noisy at night (like how people tend to get when they get drunk or are out partying late at night). Honestly man that stuff is so pathetic, you came to this island to study and people indulge in so many other activities and end up failing.
Just form a good group of friends to study and chill with and always look out for each other and stay together esp. at night. If at any instance you find yourself lonely and scared, call the security and ask them to escort you. Everything will be fine you have nothing to worry about.
Good luck

I have been at ross for 4 semesters and have not heard of any incidences. Believe me if something happens or remotely looks like something happened the whole school would know about it.

there's no way i can really respond to this without coming off like an insensitive prick....but i'll try anyways. bear with me. just like a lot of people before me have mentioned in this thread, the possibilty of an act like that being committed against a woman is probably going to be no different than many places in the states, throughout the world, ect. it's a horribly unfortunate fact of life. crime is going to happen. you just have to be aware of your surroundings, it's that simple, just like in any situation really, regardless location. you're going to a very new and unfamiliar land, and you can't help but be cautious, especially at first. don't put yourself in stupid situations. i mean, for perspective, i suppose i'm a fairly imposing dude at 6'3, but when i get down to dominica in a week...even i don't plan on making it a habit of hanging out late at night by myself in remote locations. it's just dumb. you're going to a third world country with slightly more relaxed laws, i'm presuming you're american and if so you might carry a bit of a target on your back, and regardless of ethnicity you might appear as a tourist to the inhabitants and again appear an easy target. you know, i don't even want to sit and lay blame on the natives either...it's a real sad shame that students could be commiting these acts too. hopefully i'm not going to incite a scare....but i did my undergrad at a fairly well respected liberal arts university that you'd think would be full of many respectable scholars, but rape was fairly prominent fact of life there too, as every school is going to have a few heathens. on an side though, only worse part about that was seeing as it was a private university, my school consistently covered up reports of rape seeing as they were not governed by the same laws of state-funded institutions. i don't know what Ross' policy is though. you just have to err on the side of caution that it could happen down there. it's ridiculous to be naive and think the whole island of dominca is some pristine crime-free haven. anyways, long story short, just be smart about it. keep good company, be aware of your surroundings, and don't put yourself in stupid situations. i'm not saying run around all paranoid being suspicious of everyone you meet...just be safe and smart. ok, i'm rambling now, hopefully i don't come off as too harsh...

First of all-I get easily annoyed with rumors(he said, she said stuff), but from my experience there have been MANY experiences in Dominica in which Female Ross Med Students have been raped with knifes to their necks, it's happened along Banana Trail, and places in which the lighting was dull or too many bushes...and unfortuantely, in some student's houses when they came home at night...I don't wanna scare you...but there are plenty of caribbean med schools out there that are much safer.
Last thing I'd like to mention, Dr. M.'s(Biochem teacher) own wife-a wonderful woman, who by the way is handicapped, was raped aswell...these are not rumors...if I offended anyone, I'm terribly sorry...I would never post something this morbid...I have a mother and a sister who I never wanted to visit me while I was there b/c of this...
Not everyone(locals) on that island is bad...there are obviously good people there...I'm just telling you what I know...good luck with your choices...

finch's first cd is solid...mars volta is a listening staple of mine, pure genious...track down some brazil, fall of troy, code seven, coheed and cambria, and dredg...they've got nothing on MV in terms of talent, but all in the same vein..
anyways, in all seriousness and back to the point of this forum....in the information Ross just passed out to me when i arrived on campus yesterday...they so far said there has only been one reported rape and one attempted. do what you want with that. from the experiences i listed earlier...i always take anything about reputation/stats that universities post about themselves with a grain of salt...
