Laptop and everything that you need to study is tax free. Your personal belongings (clothes, etc..) as well. Now, If you arrive with a brand news stereo, you will pay 20% duties on it.

Does the school provide student a place to stay during the first term?

If you bring foods (dried foods), they will tax them too. My friend was paid for bringing cardriges for printer. Trust me they to get money from you............

They really do not look that closely at the airport. I bring numerous items everytime I have came back from the U.S. i.e. cartidges, food, radio, , paper, printer, etc. Just tell them you are a student and nothing is brand new. Many of my classemates have brought routers, mp3 players, phones, and I have never heard anyone have a problem. If you are bringing something new, just dont have it new in the box or any tags indicating they are new, then they have no way to prove whether it is new or not. There are always ways around the system.

If you stick them in the "printer", they will do a "cavity search".

Cruelty to the printer:)
Imagine those dirty fingers inside my printer's cavity:):):)
I will need to take my printer to his primary care electro for a universal shot:)
As for Pc, when I coming there, I will take my Compaq Armada 7800 series with me. That pc is tested for all weather:) like my momma VW. You can drop that armada from 15th floor...still going stronger. The price is right too ($200):)

It's getting worst recently, custom at airport will check everything. Some of my friend's relatives came here for WhiteCoat ceremony brought foods for them and got.....paid 20% for that. Yesterday at the airport, my friend was accidently driven his car into paid parking and they asked him to pay $1.00 (he di not park his car there).

Now...when you say they search everything... do you mean all your carry-on luggage...or do they go thru your Checked-in luggage also?
I guess I'll have to take my electronics and everything out of the boxes so it looks
like its used. Since everybody doesnt pay the duty... I am guessing thats how
they squeeze through customs.

I've been in and out a bunch and they've never searched my stuff. We broght routers, mp3s, dvd, cds, new and old clothes, a printer, tons of printer cartridges...and they never check...Just say you are SMU and keep walking...it's all personal use....so just tell them that....you should be fine!!!
Cheers
