I'm glad someone asked cuz I did soooo much research into European Medical
schools before I looked into SMU.
I have been to their affiliate Mercy College..and met their Admissions guy.
PUMS (its their new name for KMU) Poznan Univ. of Medical Science
is part of a university which is hundreds of years old.
1) Here's the problem....their ENGLISH program was started around 1993
I believe and the English Program is NOT cali approved.
They really dont seem to be making an effort there....but ask PUMS
students for info about that.
2) They do NOT have US clinicals.
They advertise tha tyo ucan do 1 year of electives in US...BUT
the huge downside is if you do more than 12 weeks of electives in NY
...you wont get licensure in NY.
3) In clinicals ...there is no US based system..and most students complain they dont learn enough because of the language barrier.
Learning Polish for clinicals is very important and they have polish courses.
4) Semsters are extremely long....like from Jan. to June sometimes.
5) Library has one or two terminals in english for you to use.
6) Some professors would be more comfortable teaching in native Polish.
Reasons 1,2 and 3 are why I came to SMU. SMU is making efforts and
headed in the right direction.
Pros of SMU over Poznan ( aka PUMS .. or KMU) :
1) SMU is recognized by many states.
2) US clinicals will allow you to work next to US med students.
US clinicals will help you for Step 2 and learn a lot more.
3) Trimester system, and close to home....45 min. flight from
Cayman to Florida.
4) You dont have to learn another language ( Though I'm not opposed
to learning multiple languages..as it can only be beneficial)
5) Even though Cayman is more expensive than Poznan, you will
live comfortably just like you do in US.
6) SMU is building affiliations with research institutions and centers.
7) Most importantly... excellent professors...as I have heard virtually no
complaints about quality of teaching.
8 ) Online notes...and internet access everywhere.
9) Dual MD/MHSA program..... is an option if you want to be better
prepared for the real world when you practice or work in hospitals.
Poznan should be an option only if you dont get into SMU.
Good luck. Have a Nice day :)
