SUSOM needs be more up-to-date about TEXTBOOKS

Friends,

I don't know how people feel about the information regarding which textbooks Saba students should buy for a particular semester. I feel that the school has NOT done a good job informing students or keep up-to-date which textbooks are required for which each semester. I've looked at many postings, 1st semester students are quite confused and have to scramble around about which texts to buy, what edition, where etc...I had the same problems too. Instead of getting a straight answer from the school, I have to ask around, search through this forum etc...The textbook information provided by the UBO and the student handbook are somtimes so much different that you don't know what to do.

I will be attending Saba in September, so don't get me wrong. But I think the school can do so much better informing the up-to-date textbooks information of each semester. Maybe it is a foreign medical thing or maybe the school thinks this particular aspect of medical school is not that critical.

Are you talking about what they sent in your packet or what is on the internet?

They list the most current books onthe internet. I don't know if that is reflected in your packet. Probably not.

When I was on SGA we also gave them a list of items we felt first semester students should bring. I haven't heard if that list ever made it into the packet. If not do a search on here for it - I posted it a while back.

I got a CD without the handbook (and booklist) on it.

I also got a package from SOS. Didn't get anything from SGA.

Hi,

There are really only few well known books that all medical schools use for each subject, and they keep getting updated every year or so. It is not worth sweating over the exact edition or book. We must realize now that textbooks are there to supplement our lectures and whatever is not in the textbook, one can find in the Library(hopefully). So don't fret too much over the book list. However, as I have been reading on the forum the BRS are the real life savers.

You have it all wrong. Lectures supplement textbooks; not the other way around. Don't ever rely on a lecture for your knowledge base. You have to read the text in most cases. Especially the more important subjects of pysiology, path, pharmacology. Starting a good reading regimine now will help you in residency.

I fully agree. You can't rely on the lectures to get you through. Remember that you're in medical school to become a good doctor, not to simply pass. Also remember that your entire time on Saba is time learning and essentially studying for Step 1. Just because your prof taught it doesn't mean it will be on the MLE. Just because it's on the MLE doesn't mean your prof will teach it to you.
