Surgery: Huron, Cleveland, OH: 10 Ross students per rotation. Call is Q4. All cases require students to scrub in.Many classic bread and butter cases are presented. 2nd level trauma center. A mix of FMG's and American grads. Long hours but good learning opportunities.

Many electives can be done at this hospital which works well to fill in gaps between cores. You do need to sign up for them 3-6 months in advance.
Such electives: infectious disease, cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, radiology, pediatrics, urology, oncology, internal medicine sub-internship (AKA: Sub-I), neurology, and nephrology.
I recommend all because you work with the attending one-to-one and can ask any questions you like. You will see both inpatients and outpatients.

I did my rotation there a year and a half ago, but I know that not much has changed.
Call is Q4 or Q5 depending on the number of students. You pair up with another student, so that both of you are on call.
It's a level 2 trauma hospital, so you will get GSW exploratory surgeries at 2am or subdural hematoma evacuations at 1am!!
Hours: rounding begins at 6am, you have to have 2-3 patient notes done prior to this. Surgeries begin at 7am and you sign up for those you are interested in (1-2/day). There's usually a lunch time lecture/conference also. Continue notes, checking on patients, discharging, consults, putting in lines, and surgeries with the surgical resident that you are assigned to work with that day. Tuesday and Friday afternoon's are clinic days, 1-4pm.
If all goes well, you can leave by 5-6pm. Afternoon rounds begin anywhere between 4:30-5:30pm for an hour or so....
Living close to the hospital is adviseable. Look on the Case Western University website for an "off-campus" housing list...it gives you more than enough options and is updated weekly. Just explain to the landlord that you are a medical student and will be there for 3 months. Live comfortably in Cleveland Heights (5 min drive to the hospital).

Hi, I'm starting my rotation in GS at Huron on monday, and the Housing list at Case was excellent, most people expect med students to move in or live there for a few months. Craigslist was relatively scant, and the housing list for Cleveland from Ross was also helpful, many people allready are accustomed to Ross students and called back quickly....If anyone else is looking for housing here, you should definately look into those 3 sources and find the one that works best for you.

Huron is pretty tough from what ihave been told. They come at you with 100+ hours and inform you that no law prohibits them from working you this long as you are a student, not a doctor. Ouch. Better to shoot for Griffin in CT. This is Ross' best for Surg.

actually, huron doesn't offer any electives aside from sicu...and i'm not sure it's a good idea to do that there either. there's only one resident in the sicu and 2 students rotating through as part of the surgery core, so it gets pretty crowded, which means you won't really get to see and do much. my surgery rotation there was great though.

this is true for surgery, but not for medicine. you pretty much only work 40 hrs/wk for medicine. but both are great rotations. you see and do a lot, and the teaching is great.

you are correct. i think i was half asleep (blame it on intern year!) when i wrote the post..I was speaking about electives for Harbor Hospital in Baltimore.
Huron only has a surgical ICU elective which may be troublesome to get.

This is just a concise view on my rotation here...Im honestly too tired to leave a full detailed one...BUT if you would like to know more, please send me a message.
Ive done IM at Huron. And honestly experience and what you learn really does correlate well with who you are placed with. Two months you are on the floor, and the 3rd month you spend in ICU. My first month I spent a lot of time seeing patients and and doing LOTS of progress notes (soap). I only did several new admissions and couple full H+P's. My second month was spent following some dude who could hardly speak English (very nice guy, and respectful...but I would much rather have someone that I could understand and teach some stuff). But in that month I tried to spend time on my own just reading. Finally my last month was ICU. This was ok I guess. I had some time to actually read up on certain cases and conditions that you see in the ICU. I thought the best part of what was the actual rounding in the morning.
Honestly rotations are what you make out of them...but that only does go so far. Its hard to spend ALL your free time studying and reading, knowing that you are paying a lot of money to be a student at the hospital. But like I said, it also depends on what intern you have. This program actually has quite a few EXCELLENT resident physicians. However, there also those that may not be as good, in terms of teaching, and their knowledge. But this was just my first rotation...though it seems like its a common trend anywhere you go.
hey....anyone starting IM at huron march 22nd? or around that time?
I'm starting IM on March 22nd at Huron. This'll be my 6th rotation (and my final core). Afterwards I'm off to take my boards.
oh ok..thas coo.... ur lucky!!! this will be my first rotation....so a bit scary, but gotta get the ball rolling....and soon i'll be in ur situation
if you dont mind....where about are you stayin in cleveland? i'm found a few places in cleveland heights....not sure the area is tho....i was in cleveland about a year and half ago with a different school....and some areas are ghettoooo... although my primary goal is to be relatively close to the hospital...and not as concerned with the area!
I'm scheduled to start an IM rotation at Huron hospital in June. Is there any one who has done this rotation recently? If so can you tell a bit about the rotation and the hospital itself?
