IM at Mt Vernon is actually not bad at all. Things can always be better, but your typical day is this: Start off with morning rounds which consist of you listening to new admits that occured at night and anything new going on with the ward patients or the ones in ICU or telemetry. You then talk with your intern or resident who usually assigns you patients to go see and write SOAP notes on. You usually also get scut work to do (IV's, blood draws, ABG's, etc). Throughout the day you get called back to the conference room for lectures with the attendings on a variety of topics.

You get in at 730am every morning and leave at about 5pm, except your call days which is every 3rd day, then you usally get out around 8pm, sometimes later. Mt Vernon is an Urban community hospital so its old, poor and sometimes dirty but if your proactive about learning and let them know your willing to help out with anything, you'll do great.

You have plenty of down time to read and study so bring your books every day. Well, there's more but im tired of writing...hope this helps.

I haven't heard anything bad about the rotation. It's one of Ross's stronger IM core rotations.

The only problem is the location, it's located AWAY from the other Ross-affiliated hospitals. So you'll probably have to re-locate after the rotation if you plan on staying in NYC for the rest of your rotations.

Did a clerkship there in the fall of 2004.

As per the last writer's post, Mount Vernon is a good place to do the IM clerkship as well as any elective you can get. The only drawback to the clerkship is that students that start clerkships in early July/August are assigned to 1st year interns who know little more than the students, and the new residents are definitely overworked. Teaching rounds are few and if you don't seek these out on your own, you probably won't see many. The didactic sessions at noon, by attendings, are great and informative and most of them are catered by Pharm reps. The once-a-week CME, presented by a professor from another teaching hospital are informative and usually well done and relevant. The hospital's Education Department (not IM dept) offers CME courses for nurses and techs that are good learning tools for medical students. You have to go find out about these on your own. Get to know Andrew, the Residency Coordinator, he can open a lot of doors for you and is very well informed on what is happening in the hospital in the way of extra training. Make friends with the phlebotomy techs because they can teach you a lot of good techniques and the nurses in the ICU can be very educational, if you can get them to warm up to you. If you get a chance, do a 2 week elective in Hyperbaric Medicine. You won't find many places that have a hyperbaric/wound care dept and if you plan on doing IM/FP/Peds, you can't go wrong by learning heavy duty wound care from professionals.

As with most of the clerkships I have done, if you don't go out on your own and look for learning experiences, you won't learn much. Don't expect everything to be handed to you, it won't be, and the only person you will be hurting (other than your patients) if you don't go looking for learning experiences is you!

Housing is difficult to find, but visiting the management of the local apartment buildings, you are likely to find a sublet for short periods of time.

Do mount vernon hospital do their own lab work or do I have to make a trip to the doctor?

They didn't even ask for evidence of having health records, titers, etc when I did my rotation back in Fall of 2004. But I did know a guy who went to employee health and got some labs drawn.

Mt. Vernon was an excellent rotation and would definitely recommend it!!

Does anyone know about surgery at this hospital? Do they have a residency program for it? What affiliations do they have? I ask because I might get a surgery rotation at this institution and was wondering the specifics.

I am doing surgery at mount vernon. Apparently its a site that ross can do ACGME surgery that not many people know about. If people need a good surgery rotation, then you can do it here.

Its a quick commute from NYC (30 min)and the residents are really cool. People who want a quality surgery rotation should definately ask their clinical advisor for it. Its ACGME also. Starting dates are flexible too. You can start any week.

What are your hours like? I'm currently scheduled at Cape Cod for summer of next year, but wouldn't mind something with more leniant hours.
Is the program organized? Do you have lectures? A schedule? How many students per rotation?

Sorry for all the questions!

I did my medicine rotation there in Sept of last year and I know there are AUA and St George students that rotate there. The rotation actually was setup while I was in medicine. I think I remember seeing around 5 or 6 students there at a time for surgery but it might vary.

That sounds about right. There are 6 students currently, and students are starting and leaving at various times.

I'm having difficulty finding the ACGME status online. I assume it's through the southshore program affiliated with NYMC?

I just called the hospital for scheduling and details, but the coordinator is currently on vacation.

One question I had before I go any further: is this one of those cases where the ACGME status of the program is up for interpretation? To put it more straigh-forward: the affiliation with NY Med College is with South Shore Medical Center...so would rotating thru Mount Vernon Hospital (although in the same system as SSMC) pose any potential problems, ie: the "Jackson Park affiliate" rotations in Chicago, or is this essentially accepted by all as ACGME?

As for scheduling, they typically take about 5-6 students in the summer, but now that its fall, up to 8 students are accepted. We have 5 students currently, but that number will drop to 2 in a few weeks. So there will be spots available for new students.

dang- that's gotta be AT least a hour-hour and a half commute- and the traffic on the BQE and the Van wyck will suck!

hi,

I was wondering if you know what time we are supposed to be there on the first day? The information page Ross sent me says classroom D at 7:30am.
However, when I call the medical education department they say to come at 9:30am and tell the information desk people in the lobby to call them and they'll come down and get us.

I'm also looking for info on books that are useful.
What are you bringing for health records? I have physical exam, ppd, chest xray, titres for rubella, varicella, measles, and proof of vaccinations. I don't have titres for hep B and don't even know if i have proof of vaccination, but I do know i am vaccinated. I hope that it won't be a problem.
I believe you also need your transcript and USMLE score report. You can send a fax request to Ross for an unofficial transcript including your name and student number and signature and a fax number they can fax it to.
Let me know if you found out anything that we are required to have.

I did IM at MVH last year....morning report starts at 7:30 everyday. It wont really matter on the first day. All the residents are very laid back and there is no formal orientation...the chief resident will assign you to a team and tell another student to show you around. I would not stress about it. Everything at MVH is very relaxed...no one is going to hunt you down to make sure you are working. After you are done your notes if you want to disappear you can. You basically get what you put into this rotation.

Oh on the first day just talk to the people at the front desk and tell them you are a new student. They will probally send you upstairs to the chief resident's office which is on the very last floor, i think 6th floor.
