I did the nephrology elective at LICH in November 2004. Here is my review:

The structure of this elective is good overall. It is divided up into inpatient consultation service and outpatient nephro clinic one day a week.
On the inpatient consultation service you work with the fellow and you both see new consults. Usually you will be given your own consult to go see and then you meet up with the attending later to present and round. The teaching is good depending on the fellow and attending. I had some good ones. Additionally, you attend noon conference each day where lunch is provided (the cafeteria at LICH blows, although there is a taco bell and a au bon pan in the hospital) so this is a good thing. Occasionally there was nephro specific lectures that we attended by outside lecturers which were also catered (as you can see free food was important to me). these were informative as well. Apparently the head of the neprho division, Dr. Avram, was one of /or the main developer of dialysis, so the physicians were all pretty sharp in this area.
The clinic experience was about what you would expect. You would see patients and then present to the attending, who would usually then go see the patient with you. Additionally at the time I was there, I was in the middle of residency interviews, so I missed some days which they were cool about.
Overall, a good exposure to general nephrology with good teaching. Plus Brooklyn Heights is one of the prettier areas in Brooklyn. Also, there is an awesome deli across the street called Brooklyn Heights deli that has the best coffee!!

LICH no longer takes Ross students for cores or electives.

any particular reason why? LICH is part of Continuum Health and would have been good to maintain the relationship and possibly expand affiliations to the other hospitals under Continuum.

Reason: How much opprtunity in getting fellowship(GI, Nephrology etc) at LICH or outside after doing IM residency at LICH? Do they give preference if one does residency at LICH ?

Thanks
