Does Ross still have this site? Supposedly it has all cores and electives, acgme. It might not be in the nicest location, but its always convenient to do everything in one place. Anyone have any info?

Hi, I created a Family Medicine Core rotation at this hospital recently by contacting their Medical Education department. I was wondering if anyone out there could please provide any information (experiences in rotation, surrounding area, subway access etc.) about this hospital? Thank you very much!! :0) ~Joopnight

Hiya, I'm actually in the middle of my Family Medicine rotation. I'm beginning to like it a little bit more than when I first started. Let me start from the beginning...I live in Queens, so getting to the hospital is a biotch. I drive to save time (since it would take 2-3hrs to get there in the morning via bus & subway = hell no), but it totally burns a hole in my wallet. First, crossing the bridge back and fourth costs $9 total everyday. Second, the parking is $103 a month, but you can only buy the pass on the 1st of the month, if you start on say June 26th like I did, you get screwed at $10/day for parking. And don't get me started on gas.and ridiculous traffic...i think i calculated that it costed almost $25/day just to get to work and back during the first week.
Besides this crap, the rotation is not too bad. I work with an Australian attending, he's very intelligent and I've learned a lot about outpatient medicine, which is quite different from the internal medicine rotation i had prior to this one. If you would like to learn about HIV/AIDS, then this clinic is the one for you. 1 out of 3 patients I've seen so far is an HIV patient. There is also a very high incidence of STDs here. I've also seen other interesting cases, like diffuse scabies infection, hereditary elliptocytosis, and I dx case of SLE clinically (few days after blood test was +ANA, +dsDNA) which was really exciting, and assisted & performed like 20 pap smears so far. The best thing though is sharpening interviewing skills; lol, less use of Maxwell booklet
The clinic on Fulton Ave. is a bit aged, but there's still a good working environment (FYI: surgery rotation is in newer hospital on Grand Concourse Ave.). Unfortunately, at this time there are no lectures for Ross students (or should I say 'student,' since I'm like the only Ross student in the whole building), so this kinda sucks. Best thing is to take advantage of the down time, and pull out "boards and wards" or "first aid" and read about the case right after patient visit is over...pda is very helpful in this sense.
If you work at Fulton, then I highly recommend that you pay for the parking, which is right across the street from the hospital. The area is not very safe at all  , I especially say this for female students; I guess a one block radius is ok in the morning and afternoon, but walking around w/ a white coat there in the evening seems risky (of course, I write 'seems' since i'm not silly enough to try it).
Bronx Lebanon is one of the only hospitals that Ross is affiliated with that is ACGME-accredited for every core rotation and many of the electives. In fact, if your schedule permits, you could probably do every single rotation and elective at this hospital if you wanted to; I heard that one Ross student had done this, and actuallly did his residency there. You can request rotations at Bronx Lebanon through the Ross Clinical office, but you have to do a small interview at the hospital w/ clinical coordinator Gladys (and no, I don't have her number). Sorry, don't know too much about the rotations at Grand Concourse, but if y'all have questions about Fulton Clinic you can send me a msg or reply. Cheers. ~Joopnight

It seems there are actually only a few surgery rotations in NYC that are ACGME approved (Peninsula, St Barnabas, St. Johns Episcopal, and Wyckoff are all DO programs as far as I have seen). Anyone have any information about the surgery rotation here? Personal feedback would be greatly appreciated. Variety of cases? Good attendings and residents? A valuable experience?

Has anyone done Ob/Gyn at this hospital recently? What are the hours like? How bad is the commute from Queens?

I called the graduate medical education office, and they told me that there is no ob/gyn core rotation available for Ross students. I do not think you can do ob/gyn at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

Incorrect. We do have OB-Gyn @ Bronx-Lebanon. Anyone have any idea how good that rotation is? What about Peds?

I did OB and Peds both early in 2007 so I dont know if things have changed since then. I have to say they were both EXCELLENT rotations. First off, you are the only Ross student along with 5 or 6 Albert Einstein students. This small number allows for tons of hands-on and learning opportunities. Both have residency programs and the residents love to teach. There are lectures every day. You are treated like part of the team and given responsibilities as such. You have to spend a portion of the peds rotation in the ED. You have 100% autonomy while there and actually do the full write-up, physical, and plan. The attending then reviews your plan, discusses the case with you, and the patient is treated according to your plan.
Both rotations require full days (till 6pm most days) with a few short calls till 9pm in both and 1 or 2 overnight calls in OB. The hospital provides you with free meal tickets for lunch and breakfast. No parking for students but there is a parking lot a few blocks away that charges $8 per day or $128 for the month but you can only buy the pass on the 1st of the month. The area is pretty bad at night- significantly worse than the area surrounding wyckoff. I have to say that even as a male i had to watch over my shoulder when i had late call and needed to get to my car. The actual hospital is pretty nice and of small to medium size (maybe a little bit bigger than Wyckoff). Overall, I would strongly recommend this rotation to anyone. Very tough to actually get a spot in those two rotations so start trying now. Any more questions just PM me

I am finishing up my family medicine rotation at Bronx Lebanon and thought I would share. For someone coming from Wyckoff's internal med, this rotation was a breath of fresh air and learning. There are only twenty students in the rotation divided into three groups, and those groups are further broken down so essentially you are with 2 to 3 other students. This makes learning and interaction with the residents much better. You will do 2 weeks of inpatient (7am to 7pm) which is essentially like internal medicine. You will also do 2 weeks in the clinic setting and 2 weeks of night call (7p to 7a). I have to say I learned the most during my inpatient weeks. I was with an attending who liked to teach and would pimp you randomly. They used to let students write most of the progressive notes and admission paperwork. However, the Joint Commission is expected soon so now we students can only do the admitting H/P. Most of the residents will let you do as much or as little as you want. Everything from blood draws (which become monotonous) to gyn exams, wound care, and other stuff. Nothing too dramatic. With the exception of a few attendings (2 really), most of the attendings were willing to answer any questions and were genuinely interested in what you had to say. I really enjoyed all of the residents I interacted with. Like everywhere else, there are a few who are outspoken and tend to be too negative. However, I am a big fan of several of the residents. Two are actually Ross grads. Anyways....
As far as other rotations at Bronx Lebanon, there are several Ross students here doing cores from surgery to OB to peds to everything. Gladys is the director and it is better to meet with her in person. There is typically only one spot in each rotation for a Ross student since Albert Einstein students rotate here as well. For instance, OB is currently booked through September. However, if you are willing to plan ahead and are interested in this hospital, working with Gladys to plan your rotations is possible.
I hope this helps.

I'll be starting Family here in September. I'm not sure if anyone has info for housing where I don't have to commute hours as stated in one of the previous posts.
I will return to Queens after Family rotation.
Also, if you have any experience at this hospital (especially with FAMILY rotation), please do share. Thanks.

Anyone know where i have to report for the first day of FM at Bronx-Lebanon...is it at the Grand Concourse location or the Fulton Clinic location?? Thanks

The director will send you an email the week before. But just so you know, it is on the second floor of the Fulton building. If you are a train person....take the 5 train to 149 and 3rd... then take the BX 55 to 169th. It is just up the hill. hope that helps.

i have family medicine at Wyckoff Heights starting Sept 29th, does anyone wanna switch?
This place serves the..umm...well...underserved. It residents are ALL on J1 visa as far as I can tell. There are a variety of surgeries performed here including some throcoscopies. Overall its not a bad place to get a good clinic expereince. However, if your really looking to get into a surgical residency I would look to Maimonides. Its competetive to get a rotation spot there but they seem to be Ross freindly (the dept. head does lectures during 5th in Miami).
