See my post in some sticky about clinical sites. This is the pits, so def don't come here unless you want to be abused, misused, and end up dumber than when you started.

Hi ive, been asigned to kings county for IM, however i have the option of turning it down for a rotation at trinitas hospital for IM. I've heard all the horror stories about kings but dont know a thing about trinitas. Can anyone help me on this. I know kings county looks good on paper later on when going for residency, so i dont know if trinitas is also good enough to accept over the kings site. Please let me know your opinion on trinitas for medicine...thanks

Trinitas is a cushy rotation, you'll have a great deal of didactic learning, but few, if any oppurtunity for hands on type experiences, which you would get at kings county. At kings county, you are the resident.

Has anyone recently rotated through Trinitas Hospital? I'm trying to decide between here and Raritan Bay medical center for IM but nothing really recent has been posted.

Thanks!

I start here August 18th, but I also haven't heard any recent info about the rotation. If you find anything out please let me know, too.

I'm rotating there now, about half-way through. So far it's been a great rotation. Everyone (mostly) has been really nice. There is a lot of teaching and not very many procedures. If you want to do things, you need to ask. There are many conferences, and several lectures just for the students. Each student is assigned to one intern on a team. Each team has two interns and one team leader, who is a PGY-2. So you get one-on-one. You take call q4. Last month we were over-night, but they are starting to do a night float system, which means your call is only 7a-7p. On non-call days, you will go home by 3 or 4, if not earlier. You have to show up at 7:30 for morning report, when the interns on call the day before present a case. (Free breakfast.) Then you round with your intern until noon conference. There are other conferences that are not regularly scheduled. They give you free parking and vouchers for $100 worth of free food at the cafeteria each month. You have to write up H&Ps (8-10) to turn in to Dr. S, the attending. He meets with us about three times a week (just the students) so that we can each present a case to him. It's very casual, he just wants us to learn the process. He meets with us individually half-way through the rotation to discuss the H&Ps and how we are progressing. I think it's a really good rotation so far. If you want to do procedures, you have to ask or make friends with some nurses. I have done central line removals, rectal/Guiacs, etc. No IVs yet, but I haven't really pushed for it. Some say there is too much teaching and not enough patients, but I think it's a fair balance. Hope that helps.

I understand that u already did medicine rotation at Trinitas. If i may ask, where did u live during ur time there or do u have any advice for housing in Eizabeth or neighboring cities? I start medicine this september and im house-hunting.

I lived with a relative my first month until I found a place in Brooklyn Heights and commuted. (My other rotations were in NY.) One other girl on my rotation lived in Manhattan and everyone else lived in a house they found on the Ross Housing list. A woman owns the house and rents out the rooms. Not sure about the contact info. Since you don't have much time (same for us) I would recommend checking out the Ross housing list for something short-term until you can find something better, especially if your other rotations will be in NY/NJ.

As far as the rotation itself, it is really a good one. Be present and work hard and you will learn a lot. Some of the lectures get tedious, as there are a lot of them, and you don't get to do many, if any, procedures, but you will learn medicine. You will be paired with one intern and switch to another each month. Ask questions, read a lot and keep up with what's going on with your patients.

So how did things turn out? I am from TX, but grew up in Jersey, and still have family there. If I can't do my rotations in TX, I am considering Trinitas or NY Downtown. I plan to treat the homeless and mentally ill population. Is there a good outreach program at Trinitas??
