Found this to be a good roation. Overall time was divided between geriatric, ER, pediatric, inpatient consultation, acute inpatient, and chronic inpatient. Spent some time with attendings during daily rounds, but most time spent with residents. Majority of the residents loved to teach and are generally fun people to be around. Little to nil scut. Lectures at least 2h per day with medical and psych grand rounds qwk. Call approx, 2-4 times per month, stay till 8pm and cover ER with resident. Some projects and an exit exam, but all doable.
Overall was an excellent rotation. Possibly more work-intensive than other psych rotations, but I feel that I don't have to learn as many topics on my own for Step 2.
Downside is that it is tough to find a place to live in Paramus. Many commuted from NYC.

I am starting psych at Bergen in May and was wondering if anyone could recommend an area to look into housing. I understand that many people commute from NYC but I am not very familiar with the area and any advice would be greatly appreciated as far as places (regions) to live. Thanks so much in advance.

i did my psych rotation here. it was amazing! the entire hospital is psych, so you really see all aspects of it. you rotate through er, geriatrics, peds, chronic adult, acute adult, and detox. you're on call 3 times for the entire rotation. like a lot of other rotations, you get as much out of it as you put in. we rotated with a few sgu students, who did nothing but take naps and surf the web and got away with it. some of us who really did what we were supposed to do got a lot out of it. i learned so much that i didn't have to review much psych for step 2 on my own. the residents and attendings were very nice. the lectures were great! i highly recommend this rotation.
oh yeah...i found a room to rent on craigslist.com. there are a lot of people in and around paramus who rent rooms to students, so finding a room wasn't a problem at all. i don't recommend commuting to/from ny, as the traffic is ridiculous.

This must be your first CORE rotation. What Core rotations do you leave a 3pm unless of course you stated the day before and had finished 30 hours on the day?

Try SJEH. Most people leave before 3pm on a regular basis...

actually i have to agree with Junito, i know plenty of rotations where you can leave by like 2pm or 3pm. and for your info, this is my 3rd core. i've done the hardest rotations at ross, and i have left at 5pm the latest, unless ur on call of course. anyways, if you have input about this particular rotation, i'll appreciate it, if you dont then thanks for your time

Just finished a 6 weeks rotation. It was great. You work in different areas of psych. ER was my absolute favorite. Residents are great and love to teach. You rotate with SGU and UMDNJ (sometimes). I only rotated with SGU. They were great we got along like one big family. There was about 12 of us. You have to do two presentations. One was a topic you pick, the other is a patient you pick. Very laid back. You do have lectures once-twice weekly. You have grand rounds, both medical and psych each week. You have one hour of "self-study" time in the afternoon when the residents are in lecture. The director does keep close tabs on the students and residents BUT he's got over 40 years experience as a psychiatrist and is a great teacher.
If you're thinking about doing it there, don't hesitate.

After reading all the reviews, I was pretty excited to start this rotation.........
I Just finished several weeks ago and to sum up my feelings let me just say I thought it was very overrated. The other posts are pretty accurate in detailing the rotation overall, and Im sure things were a little different (some policies and stuff have changed from what I hear)
You do rotate in different units, including ER each week. Grand rounds on Tues and Wed. Daily lectures, self study time, and 2 powerpoint presentations.
However....I'll be honest the lectures were a big dissapointment. Im sorry but for the most part they were pathetic. There was probably 1 or 2 specific lectures that I thought were really well done and helped us, but the vast majority feel like a waste of time. Self study time was taken away from us after the first week, since the director felt as if we didnt have enough lectures.....Although this evened out as the rotation progressed, because many of the lecturers started to just not show up for their designated time.
In terms of the rotations...ER Psych is actually really cool. I mean, this 1 week makes the entire rotation worth it. If you didnt get it (some students didnt, totally at random) then the rest of the 5 weeks would just seem painfull.
Call isnt bad at all. You are on about 4x for the entire rotation...and its just short call from about 5-8 pm, or a weekend morning call (9-1pm).
Bottom line though....is that I did (surprisingly) learn A LOT about Psych...more than I thought I hoped to. Ever since Sem 3 on the island anything related to behavioral science, never seemed to want to sink in....until this rotation, which is the big plus.
I mean I dont know how other psych rotations are so I cant comment. But like i said you do learn alot (which is the ultimate reason we are in rotations) AND its only 6 weeks.
This is just a brief concise review...anyone else want more information regarding living near Paramus or commuting, etc just message me.

I did my psych here last year at this time, and I thought it was one of the best rotations I have ever done, and I am not intested in pyschiatry. The didactics are great, the material is high yield board oriented. You see a great deal of cases that you would not see in other psych rotations. Plus, US students rotate here too, so you know the quality has to be decent.

I recall we had about two a day, given by different attendings, and third year residents, but most by Dr. Yuckysphere.

A car would definately be necessary, your commute otherwise would take a good 2-3 hours.

Horrible place to do rotation, currently doing it right now, week 4 of 6, and residents don't do jack, they take your interview material and use it as their own, and you don't learn anything. The lectures are garbage, exception is the child psychiatrist, and you have to sign in and out and are treated like high schoolers here. The residents are all IMG's from overseas and don't know how the US system or culture works all that well and are probably undergoing culture shock but act very egotistic simultaneously, there are some exceptions but they are rare. I don't know how other psych rotations are but words can't describe how disappointed I am here. AVOID.

ive been hearing good thing bout this site, do you commute or do you live in parasmus. You think its feasible to live in nyc ( ex queens) and commute, what time do you generally leave? Thanks
fragglerock
10-04-2007, 05:59 PM
you have to be there from 8-5 everyday M-F and then your on call days are 5-9 on weekdays and 9-1 on weekends, you only have 3 on call days for the whole 6 weeks. Living in Queens to come here is feasable but will drive you insanse because of the traffic, there's a lot here. I found a place off craig's list not too far away, 10 min drive, from the hospital so I got lucky but in general it is hard to find a place short term here. Still I wouldn't want to come to this place because it's horribly run and the personnel are mostly horrible too. Find another site if possible otherwise you'll find out what I mean.

I disagree with the previous posts. I'm currently doing my rotation here. And having listened during lecture I found i learned a good deal of information. And despite the fact the residents are not US grads they are still fun to work with. Granted they don't teach a whole lot, since they are busy, you can still get a lot out of lectures. Now if you are upset about the fact that you have to be told what to do, well thats just too bad. People before us screwed up and now regulations are a bit strict, deal with it. What do you think will happen when you are a resident and you get shit from attendings? Are you going to complain that you hate medicine b/c attendings are saying stuff to you. And the fact that the resident uses your work means that you did a good job. I'm sure the residents that did use your work gave you good evaluations in return.
I recommend this rotation to people. I mean its pschiatry are you really going to go into it? Its good a rotation b/c you get exposure to different parts of psych. If you are willing to pay attention to lectures you can get a lot out of this.

Thanks. any recommendations on housing thats near the hospital?
There are a number of private residents in Paramus that offer rooms to Ross students. They're not cheap, but they're close. My kid got one off Craig'sList.

I myself and other students before me stayed in the Extended Stay in Ramsey (10min drive). Compared to the 1 - 2 hour commute most students made it was totally worth it. Also if you need a place at the last minute and dont want to search on craigslist, tha works too.
Price wise...it was $75/nite. Plus wireless internet is free
The only thing that sucks about the area(state) is that gas isnt self serve...which was news to me. I think the state should totally do away with "full service" gas stations.....
As for the rotation...lol no comment. I thought the week you spend in ER was more than worth it and I learned the most there. But I didnt care for the other 5 weeks. But this seems like one of those rotations where public opinion is totally 50/50.

Considering New Jersey has some of the lowest priced gas in the country what is so bad with full service especially in the winter when it is cold and the wind is howling?

did you try the "Extended Stay" in Ramsey? If time is winding down, then thats your best bet.
As for singer....very true I agree with that. What would be ideal is to have "full" service during the winter only(Im from michigan). But I dont think it would be worth it for year round. Still much quicker to drive thru with a credit card. Maybe it was just Ramsey but all the stations I went to were always backed up because of the full service...
But... does having "full" service gas stations have any impact on oil prices regionally?

I saw that you posted at the end of May but no one has answered regarding the rotation at bergen. Have you talked to anyone about it or have you started it? I'm also going crazy looking for information about this rotation because I am buying a house in NJ and would like to do as many rotations in NJ as possible. any luck?
