Has anyone done rotations here? I just got accepted to Ross and my in-laws are asking about rotations that I might do in their area. Anyway......
heard OB/gyn gets pretty busy. q4 call I believe. I won't be doing ob or any rotations there as far as I know.

I saw on the ACGME webiste that St antony's is a participating institution for the Cook County Peds residency program. Does this mean that doing a Peds rotation at St Anthonys would be considered "green Book"? Im stll trying to figure all this green book not green book stuff out.

Is this a good place to do electives? I'm looking for a place to finish my electives all in one place without having to move from one place to another and this is an option. Any comments?

HI, I am doing OBGYN and Pediatrics back to back at St. Anthony's in Chicago from Jan 2 to the end of March 2007; does anyone know anything new about these rotations, or is anyone doing any rotations at the same hospital at the same time as me? Any housing suggestions?
Thanks and good luck to all!

I can't find St. Anthony's listed on the ACGME website.

Look under Loyola/Cook County Family Medicine program and Cook County Pedes program under Participating Institutions and you will find St. Anthony's listed under both.
Also, I think they might be listed under St. Joseph's Surgery program (I saw St. Joe's surgery residents when I was there).
Pedes and OB/Gyn are both excellent rotations here. A lot of exposure and hands-on work...very little scut work. OB/Gyn is a lot of work and divided into Labor/Deliver, Gyn Surgery, and Clinic. Pedes is divided into Inpatient, Outpatient, and Neonatology.
Surgery has a good number of cases you can scrub in on but there is some scut work involved.
IM is not good from what I hear (I personally have not done it), nor is Family Medicine unless you get one particular doctor (Dr. H-ll-an).
Most of the electives are good here...ER and Anasthesia are great! You get to do quite a bit. All electives are 4 weeks long and all rotations have set start and finish dates.
Hope this info helps.

psych at st. anthony's? I didn't think they offered that there.
Most people who rotate at St. Anthony's usually live near UIC/Rush and take the Pink Line straight to the Hospital (there is a station right next door to the hospital) or they rent places near Michael Reese and drive.

As far as Pysch, I am not sure it is offered here. I am almost done with OBGYN right now and then doing Pediatrics in a week or two. So far its been great, with plenty of deliveries and learning opportunities. Very little scutwork involved...the main drawback is a real lack of gynecology surgeries (in this entire rotation, I have only seen the lap removal of an ovarian cyst, some D+C's, and salpingectomy for ectopic pregnancy). Plenty of clinic and L+D experience, though.
Like that last post describing where most people live, its true that Little Italy/UIC/Rush/Med District is where most stay, but I lucked out and found a renovated basement one block behind the hospital (takes 2 minutes to walk). I am literally on the block that the train is on (California pink line stop). The neighborhood is purely Mexican (lots of families), but not dangerous in the least. Much, much cheaper than the other areas described above, but of course not as nice (I chose it for location, location, location).
I got lucky by finding the ad for this place on Craigslist...look for things near the Cermak/California intersection, which is walking distance from the hospital. Also, come in person to the area if you can and look for "For Rent" signs since many of the landlords here are Mexican and thus are not likely to use internet sources such as "Rooms for Rent" or Craigslist.org.

Yo I just got done doing Peds and family @ St. Anthony. I thought overall, Peds was pretty decent. Family was an absolute waste of time IF you want to learn anything. The attending we had made us go to nursing homes and mostly do his work (depends who you have). However, if you are a very efficient worker, you can be done anywhere from 12pm-2pm everyday. Anyone know anything about the Cook county prison psych rotation? Thats what I got next......

I've heard it's very good...you get to interview a lot of patients and see a lot of different Psych disorders. Hours are 9-5 everyday.

I've been reading that Family Med is pretty bad at St. Anthony's. Can anyone share specifics? I'm scheduled to do this rotation there soon and would like to know what I'm in for.

I myself have not done the rotation so I can only share what I've heard of from friends who have done the rotation.
A few of my friends who did the rotation rotated with one of 2 doctors. One doctor tends to keep her students at her outpatient clinic and she sees either pedes or ob/gyn patients primarily (can't remember which one my friends told me)...her hours were 9-6 p.m. The other doctor you can rotate with will round with you on the floors and take you to the nursing homes he works at. The doctor who rounds on the floors would come in anywhere between 9-11 a.m. and would have my friends go to the nursing home from 1-3 p.m.
I think there is another doctor who is taking students now and he takes his students to his outpatient clinic which is about 20 min away from St. Anthony's...I know one girl who rotated with him and his hours were 9-5 as well.
I think you are required to attend Friday morning lectures that the Pedes and OB/Gyn students attend at St. Anthony's. These start at 8 a.m.
Hope this helps.

Hey Doctor X, how was your PEDS rotation here? What were the hours like? How would you rate your PEDS experience here overall? As good as OB?

students can actually park in the employee parking lot, its much safer there. security will come to know your face and car as well although the first time you park there you'll have to let them know that you're a student. do NOT park on the street because ur car WILL get broken into. visitor's parking is usually still closed when you come in around 6:30 am so that's not really an option.
HOURS for OB:
call is q4 and it's 24 hour call (630am - 630am)
your schedule alternates, one day you have surgery (630am-230pm), then clinic (9am-varies from 1pm to 4pm), then your on call, then your postcall (but you still have to come in for an hour of lecture from 12-1 or 11-12.
hope that helps!

I am not seeing St Anthony's on the FRIEDA site for any Greenbook residencies or as a participating hospital. Cook does not list it as a participating institution for OB or Peds, Loyola does not list it for FM, it and Loretto are not listed for psych, St. Josephs does not list it for surgery.
Where are you guys getting the information that these are Greenbook if they are not listed in the Greenbook(FRIEDA)?
Also when did Reese come of the Greenbook for OB/Gyn?

If you check on ACGME.org, you'll see the PEDS and FAMILY programs list as affilliated through Cook County and Loyola.

Be careful with Frieda, they sometimes haven't updated their database to reflect changes noted on the ACGME website. One case in point is Surg at Wyckoff being listed as participating institution for Caritas. Always check with the ACGME first.

Like the poster above said, check Cook County Pedes and St. Anthony's is listed as a participating institution. FM at Loyola lists it as well, as does Cook County ER (the ER residents do 1 month of OB training)
If you look under University of IL, Chicago and their OB/Gyn Residency, it lists Michael Reese as a participating institution.
All of these are at the ACGME website.
I didn't find the St. Joseph's affiliation. When I was at St. Anthony's there were St. Joseph's residents...perhaps they have stopped the affiliation now?

I wonder why FRIEDA is slow in updating the info. I did find them on the ACGME website. For those of you just starting rotations always check. Don't take peoples word for it.

If anyone is interested in a very nice2BR/1Bath condo in Arlington Heights, feel free to get in touch. It's very nicely updated with a luxury feel (stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, etc.). My commute with traffic in the mornings was 1 hour by car. If your rotation lets you start earlier (ie: if you start your shift before 7 or after 10) your commute is cut-down due to lesser traffic.
Overall, this was a great place to stay if you don't want to live in the city, and only minutes from the Metra station for any time you felt like heading downtown.
It's a 2 bedroom unit for $1395/month. I believe furnished is also an option that will be considered for a few hundred more per month.

hi all,
those of you starting rotations at st. anthony's hospital in chicago and need a place to live...there is one bedroom available in a 3 bedroom apartment starting september 14. it is about 20 minutes from the hospital. it is a good location - the closer you get to the hospital, the worse the location! the rent is $300/month + utilities. utilities include gas and electric. wireless internet is also available. there is no lease required.
you would be living with two 20-something females. the landlord lives upstairs and is very reliable.
please send me a pm if interested!

I am just starting rotations and Ross is tryign to make me start reallll late, like november but I wanted to start at the very least electives @ St. Anthony's ASAP. What do I need to do to get these rotations? I have done all the immunization/score faxing a couple weeks ago. A basic question but Ross rarely picks up their phone so any info would be much appreciated! :)
