I have read the previous link to a message about Larkin which wasn't very favorable. To be fair, I have some friends whom I really respect who did their family medicine rotation at Larkin and really liked it a lot. These people aren't slackers or whiners and they like to learn. So I guess, like anywhere else, it really depends on your attitude what experience you get at Larkin. However, it is true that there are no residents there as at other FM sites. You will be working directly with an attending - which can really be better depending on the residents.
Best of Luck!

Does anyone know anything at all about the anaesthesia rotation at Larkin? I have to decide soon if I'm going to do it there or at St. Agnes. I have absolutely no intention of ever doing anaesthesia after clinicals, so if it's lax, all the better. More time to study.
Also, all the links on here to other articles are DEAD... what's going on?
Thanks,
CS

They offer the Family Medicine core, but then various electives, including anesthesia (not very many students are taken for that, however, but the plus is it's done by a Ross grad), nephrology, pulmonology/critical care, and infectious disease (which is supposed to be a very good elective). The many be others offereed, but these are the ones I'm familiar with.

The con:Larkin is a cross from a really bad internal medicine rotation to a cornocopia of all other roations, everything but the Family medicine that its suppossed to be. Your rotations consist of a week in a so called clinic which is really a dermatology office, two weeks in the hospital doing pulmonary, two weeks in nephrology and a week watching surgical procedures. All this and you have no idea who is going to grade you and what is really expected of you.
The Pro: Your in Miami, You can get this rotation at a drop of a dime and the director of the program is very very pro students, if any one messes with his students he will spend all day if need be to get it straghtned or seek punitive punishment on those who make your roation an unsafe one.
What is the difference between green hospitals and non for rotations?

Family Medicine Core:
-It's 6 weeks in total.
-The program is Monday thru Friday, unless you are assigned 4 hours of ER on a Saturday or Sunday which will happen at most twice.
-Large Group Session 9 AM, Every Morning, Monday thru Friday (except Wednesdays) meets for an hour and is headed by Dr. S*********** who lectures on a variety of topics, students do presentations on patients they saw in the emergency the prior evening if they were on "call", or final presentations.
-After large group, you report to your assignment:
2 weeks Nephrology with Dr. D*************(10 AM- ~1:30 PM)
2 weeks Pulmonary with Dr. S*************(10 AM- ~3 PM)
1 week Family Medicine with Dr. S**************(10 AM- varies)
1 week Procedures (ER, OR, Phlebotomy, GI) (10 AM- varies)
-Once a week, you are on "call", where you work in the ER for 4 hours (usually from 3-7 PM).
-Your final grading is based upon a few things: Evaluations by doctors your work with, 2 H&P Papers (~5 pages from 2 patients you see in the ER, not anything like AICM papers), and a final powerpoint presentation on a family medicine topic of your choice which is presented to the class during your last week.
Electives Available:
-Nephrology with Dr. D************-Pulmonary with Dr. . S**********
-Critical Care/ICU (you are in the same group as Pulmonary) with Dr. S***********
-Anesthesiology (by special request only)
-Infectious Disease with Dr. M**********Also, there is a Pediatrics Elective available at Miami Children's Hospital and a Pediatric Core is being developed which should be available relatively soon.

I heard Larkin accepts new students every week. How many students are at Larkin? Are the lectures like the size of those on the island?

Max students: 25
did ICU/pulm with m**** s*****. started every morning in the ICU with DR S*****. saw all ICU patients. learned a bit about vents, lines, swans, etc. afternoons at pulm office, seeing outpatient. relxed. yet informative. no call. no weekends. not a bad elective. little stress in a rotation that could be stressful at some places.

You are allowed to do a "special rotation" at Larkin in FP. You can schedule it from the Miami office...contact T. Ay.

Does anyone know what Tony Ayubi's number is in miami? I'd like to apply for an elective, thank you!
I have the number, but I he has not returned my call in over three weeks. I have called once a week and i understand this is the holiday season, but no one is taking his calls? A friend told me the best way to get him is actually through the email listed on the ross miami website. Still waiting...anyone have a suggestion?

Miss MD, your reply was excellent. Although it may not be the the brightest place to do rotations I am sick of people putting down Miami! Your reply was to the point, after all you make the best of all your rotations no matter where you are at!

Has anyone here rotated recently at Larkin for FP? I am thinking of scheduling my FP there. Are there any good electives offered at hospitals outside of Larkin in Miami that are relatively easy to schedule in advance? I think I might do the ID elective at Larkin as it seems that is a good elective to do there.
