first off:
ANY UNITS OUT THERE FOR SALE?????????????? :flag:

I'm planning to use Caribserve........I'm bringing my laptop w me...and I've been reading their website and other posts on here...and I know that I have to pay for that unit......... but I need to know:

- aside from that hardware you have to buy from caribserve, is there any add'l hardware I need to buy for my laptop while I'm still in the states? like...network card? cables? or does caribserve provide you with all that stuff? or do u even need it??

- does my laptop have to have a specific RAM or GHz, etc...

- does anyone know if I would be able to hook up 2 laptops at the same time, or does that cost double? and double the equipment I need to buy?

- if it's not worth hooking up 2 laptops, could I buy one and interchange it b/n the 2 laptops?

- on their website, it says the system requirements for usb connection and for ethernet connection, what's the difference?

any help would be great!
:flyaway:
thanks....

I know of several units for sale, but the only one I have a number for is the one I am going to be buying. :) Sorry. lol

The only hardware you need is an ethernet card in your laptop. This is also known as a network cark, and it looks similar to a phone jack, probably on the side or back of your computer. You can take your laptop to any one of a hundred different computer stores and they can probably check it in a matter of seconds to see if it works. If not, you can buy a card to put in your PCMCIA slot that will do the same thing. The other option is USB connection. Almost all computers nowadays have a USB port.

Speed of your machine won't be a problem for Caribserve. As long as you can run Windows 98/ME/2K/XP you will be fine. For Mac, don't ask me..... lol

They will run a cable into your house when they hook you up, and this cable will plug directly into your PC. If you want to run 2 machines, you can either swap them from time to time, or you can buy a router for $20-50 and split the signal so both can be hooked up at once. We run a wireless router system here, and we have 4 apartments and 7 computers sharing the same internet connection. :) You can buy anything you need here. The most you'll need is a USB or ethernet cable, no problem. If you want a router, you can buy 'em off Ebay on the cheap and have it sent down here.

I am assuming that the dorms are able to use Caribserve. Am I okay with assuming that or can I look forward to dialup?
Josh
Caribserve definitely seems like the way to go!!!!!! 8)

Do we need to sign up early via email or wait til we get down? How long does it normally take to get hooked up?

Here's another question...
Since Caribserve is a "wireless internet service," wouldn't plugging in the wire from their USB cable modem to the computer make them wired?

And is there any use for wi-fi cards down there? Does AUC use wi-fi?

Well, except on Sesame St. :)

The 'wireless' internet is only to your door, then wired from there, unless you buy a wireless router. You CAN get Caribserve in the dorms, too. You can sign up once you get here and it will take 1-2 weeks max to get you hooked up, from what they say.
