My College friend is thinking of comming to SMU with a 27 MCAT and a 3.5 GPA. Do you think these scores are enough to merit her a scholarship?
She is not in all that good financial standing and so the money saved would be very helpful to her.
She thought about SGU and ROSS but decided on SMU after her extensive research on all 3 schools [No joke she had piles of papers on her desk with emails, phone interviews, pictures and phone numbers, school official names, old ValueMD posts and student contacts at each school]
I think either way she will be comming here but just wanted to see if you guys think she should apply for the $10,000 scholarship.

Hey Charger,
I don't see why your friend shouldn't go for it. She has super marks for a Caribbean program. Besides, what is there to loose by applying? I'm seriously asking, is there any down side? If there's no downside, why not try? Does your friend have anything against D.O. programs? I'm sure she'd be in the hunt for admission for an osteopathic program.
Hope this helps...good luck to your friend!

Charger-
I think she could apply. Her marks are very competitive based on the last few scholarship students at SMU.
Its nice to read how students do all their research the right way and then choose SMU. I have no doubt if they were able to sit in class and spend a few days in the school they would not regret their decison one bit.
Welcome to SMU ... its great here !!
P.S (Prepare to work very hard)

Just out of curiosity, if someone has those marks, why aren't they applying to US MD and DO schools? She should have no problem getting in there. If she is deadset on going SMU, I would think she is competitive enough for a scholarship and what does it hurt to try?

Grades and MCAT scores will not get you a Scholarship. Make sure she/he is a well rounded student. For example, extra curriculum activities and research will help the application. It is seen more favorable a person who has a 3.6 gpa and president of the bio club, working as a coordinator in a charity and with research experience than a 3.7 gpa 27 mcat.
There were a few people last year with similar or better stats, as I remember in he SMU FA chat session) so competition will be fierce. Nevertheless, I would recommend her/him to apply. Summit it with your application process and make sure to make the date line.
Good luk

yeah tell your friend to go for it. Why not? There really isn't anything to loose and if she dosen't get it all they will do is say no. Nothing to loose but all to gain.
