I have a question about residencies. I was researching the FREIDA web site and looking at % of IMG's in certain programs, etc. Does anyone know what type of residency one does to fulfill the PGY-1 requirements of some of these programs? I ask because it seems like most of them do not have "graduate year 1 positions, available immediately upon medical school completion..." So, correct me if I'm wrong...
Some residencies require me to have a year of residency under my belt. These are not fellowships that require completion of a residency. Does one enter the match a second time following completion of their PGY-1? Does one need to enter a specific residency for PGY-1 to be accepted into a residency that starts PGY-2?
Can anyone recommend a more friendly-user reference for learning about the technical details of career paths in medicine?

Update- is the "transitional year" the one year in residency that's needed?

Some residencies like radiology, ortho, optho, anesthesia require a "Preliminary year" before you matriculate into that specific residency. This PGY-1 year can be satified usually by doing either a "transitional" year (which is a year where you do a little bit of everything, like medicine , surgery, etc.) or doing a "prelim" which is in medicine or surgery. After which point you would matriculate into said residency as a PGY-2. I think this is what maybe you were reading on freida. As far as others resources, there is a website called careermd.com. But I think FREIDA is the best place to get info on each program and each specialty.

When you apply to your "primary" field you will aslo apply to preliminary/transitional at the same time. So you are matching for 2 separate fields at the same time. During this recent match cycle, I matched preliminary medicne for pgy1 for 2005 and matched anesthesia starting 2006. It sucks because fields that require the 1 "extra" year, you have to almost double the amount of applications you send out.
