I realise that the school highly recommends the Windows XP professional version, but is anyone in the island currently using the home version with ease?

Search the posts...but Yes, people have told me they used XP Home without problems.

However, if you havent bought your laptop yet, I recommend you go for XP Pro.
But..you dont have to ;)

XP pro offers more options for networking. The average user really doesn't need it. If you can get it, though, I would. G

Just as a reminder, this is what the IT Director suggests.

At least P4 1.8 Ghz recommended
At least 512 MB of RAM is recommended.
At least 40 GB of hard disk space is recommended.
A wireless card with the 802.11G specification is required.
A 10/100 Mbps Network card (usually built-in nowadays) is recommended.

Windows XP Professional required unless you can support your own alternate OS's Active Directory integration. (With the exception of XP Home, it *can* be done using Samba, we just don't have time to support it so if you want to use Samba+LDAP+Winbind with OSX or Linux/BSD to connect to the Windows Active Directory, you're on your own.)

Windows XP Home is not supported at all. It will not ever correctly integrate into a network as it was not designed with networking in mind.

The rest (display size, etc.) is up to your personal preference.

I've been using XP Home for the last 2 semesters and haven't had any problems yet. I know people who still use millenium and they're doing fine. Only thing that is minimally necessary from your computer is to be able to connect wirelessly to a network to download lectures and check email. Hope this helps...

I don't think anyone who is using ME is doing fine. G

Hey DA,

I've used XP home for my first semester here at St. Matt's and I've had no problems at all. I purchased a software bundle including powerpoint, excell, word and a couple other programs which are a must.

As long as you have the programs listed above, XP home will not be a problem as stated here and by other posters above! Hope this helps!!

Skidoc... then I will buy the MS Office Trial Edition that came installed on my laptop.

Or should I buy the Less expensive MS Office Student Teacher Edition?

Anyone have experience with Student Teacher Ed...how it works??

Hey Knight,

Honestly, I have no clue what the difference is between the two packages you're talking about. However, I can give you this basic formula:

Powerpoint
Excell
Word

If it has these 3 programs, you're made in the shade. Powerpoint is my personal bread and butter when it comes to viewing class notes and taking notes during lecture. Hope this helps. If you have anything else, you know how to find me. Take it easy!

seen a couple of people running Linux with no problems...OpenOffice seems a fairly good alternative for MS Office...and it is free...it runs under windows too...
