If you don't want to be shoved into the first available hole during the housing tour, come 2 to 3 weeks early so you can pick an apartment at your leisure. Yes some choice spots may not be open yet but at least if nothing current is satisfactory then you can wait for it.
But come a few days after the previous semester is over or else no one will have vacated their apartments yet.
