On the new "official booklist" there are the required and the recommended books. Is it worthwhile buying any of the recommended books?
Also is the Webpath cd used for Histology good enough to replace the expensive microscope?

Do not buy the WebPath CD that BIG has listed on their list. The list I posted above is directly from the University Admin. Dean Wanger doesn't even know why BIG added the WebPath CD to the list.
WebPath is good for Pathology but NOT for histology at all. In histology, you look at NORMAL tissues and WebPath is ONLY pathological tissues. You can get a free copy of a histology CD down here from other students. Its not an illagel copy or anything, its a CD of a LOT of powerpoint presentations of slides that an old professor put together for the histo class a few years ago. That prof is now at the Vet School.
Anyways, that's a NO on the webpath CD. You don't need the recommended books at all. You may want some review books, but you can buy those later when you decide which review books you like.

On the review books, I suggest that you go to any medical bookstore where you live and look at the different types of review books available. There are lots of review books available for every subject. Get the ones with the format you are comfortable with or ones which "speak to you". The two bigges are BRS and NMS. BRS are more in an outline format while NMS are in paragraph form. If you are a fast reader, then get the NMS but these texts tend to be a little out of date. BRS are good but you'd have to read the texts first to really fully understand the materials. BRS are more regularly updated, which is a another good thing since you would want the latest information available. Also, some people like the Recall, Secrets, Ridiculously made easy, or Stars series. You can't possibly read all, so take your time in selecting these things. Take care.
p.s. yeah, get all the required texts. Don't worry about the recommended stuff since they will just collect dust.

Your other question will be answered diff. by diff. students, but I would say yes, the cd that mithdc speaks of is good enough to replace the microscope and do well. I did not use a microscope for histo.
