I'm second term. I was able last term to check two 70 pound bags coming from Dallas to GND via San Juan. I was told when getting my ticket from my travel agent this time that I would only be allowed one 70 lb checked bag. However, I checked AMRs website and it says two 70 lb bags are allowed for all international flights and flights to and from Puerto Rico. I e-mailed a rep at AMR and they said that their agents are required to follow the "2 - 70 lb checked items" allowance. If anyone has already traveled using my same route recently, can you please tell me exactly what your allowance was. Or, when you do travel, once you get there, please post as I will not be traveling until Aug. 7th.
I know of people who, using my same route last semester, weren't allowed to have more than one checked bag, therefore, they had to re-pack their stuff at the airport.

This comes up every term- Steph can't there be a sticky on this topic?
Anyway, the Baggage allowance for american eagle out of SJU is 2 checked bags totalling 70lbs. Now the thing is, not all the ticketing agents know this, so when you check in, say in Dallas, they will check you in with 2 - 70lb bags, because on American's jets that's what you are allowed. Now if you are lucky when you get to SJU, they won't notice an put your 70lb bags on the flight to GND, but they can say, in SJU, that you can't have both bags- after that I don't know what happens (since the baggage issue is the reason I've never taken AA- AJ and USAir both let you have 2- 70lb bags)-- its the EAGLE part that limits you- ask the agent about the AAEagle baggage allowances and they will(or should) give you accurate info.

I'm posting again so I can stay at the top of the forum so someone will see, but also to clarify. The problem is not once you get to San Juan; once you check your luggage (at least in Dallas) it goes through all the way to Grenada (if you're allowed 2 - 70 lbers in DFW, you're golden). My question was simply, to anyone that is departing from Dallas and going through San Juan to Grenada, what are the ticket agents allowing you to check? As far as I know, some people leaving from San Fran last term were only allowed one checked bag, while others leaving on a different day from the same airport were allowed two. Again, as far as I know, everyone departing from DFW last term was allowed 2 checked bags, I want to know if this is the case this time and only this time. I just want to know what the specific experiences are of people departing from Dallas over the course of this week. Are the ticket agents allowing 2- 70 pounders on some days but only one on others?

Is it that the bags are not allowed at all, or would you just have to pay extra for it? If you have to pay $50 or whatever for a second bag, you can get a receipt and take it up with the airline... if you're ornery enough, they'll likely refund it.

AAEagle has a summer bag and box restriction, so that even if you want to pay for extra/overweight bags, you can't. They simply won't take them.

AMerican may say that you can have 2, 70 lb bags, and you can, but don't be surprised if you get them on different days AFTER your arrival in GND. They will remove bags to make weight for that little puddle jumper from SJU to GND. My personal experience is that i packed 2 bags with a combined weight of 70 lbs and I got everything!. Word to the wise, Pack enough clothing bed sheets etc in your carry on to last a few days.

This is a real pain, I have the same problem. I already made sure with AA and they told me american eagle limitations are 2 checked bags with a combined weight of 70lbs and 1 carry on thats 40lbs or lower. I have called AA several times to make sure this info was correct and it was the same everytime. BUT, a couple students told me they allow only 1 checked bag at 70lbs or lower and 1 carry on weighing 40lbs or lower. Can the people who have taken American Eagle from San Juan Puerto Rico to Grenada please tell us which one it is already?? Thanks.

I did the exact same thing. I have called numerous times to check the veracity of their baggage policy: 2 checked in weighing a combined weight of 70 lbs, and 1 carryon weighing no more than 40 lbs. I am flying from San Diego to Chicago to San Juan to Grenada.
My question is this, if I check both luggage in from San Diego all the way to Grenada, even if my luggage is over weight (and I pay a fee), will I see my luggage someday in Grenada?

Also, one of the AA people told me we can bring a laptop backpack (personal) item in addition to the carry on onto the plane. Anyone ever do this? where do people usually put their laptops?

You are allowed one carry on (40lbs) and a personal item. What most people do and what I am doing is taking one of those smaller rolling uprights (carry on) along with a backpack (personal item). Last time I took a backpack and a shoulder laptop bag. When you check your bags from your departure point, ask the ticket lady when or if you need to pick up your baggage along your route. From Dallas it goes all the way through, but I knew someone from TN who had to pick up his bags in Dallas and then re-check them. Like I said, just ask, and they'll tell you.
