I have a 25 inch long luggage that i filled with clothes and it weighed 45 pounds. I should be able to geat 23 inch peice to use as the additional ulggage to check in for the flight from Puerto Rico. I also have a laptop that I am purchasing and a 21in carryon bag that totally weigh 40 pouds.

Any comments on the demensions of the luggage the current students brought with them or that new students going on American Eagle flight from Puerto Rico are brining with them?

Thanks for your help to this confusing question?

According to Austin Travels handout that came with my ticket.....The allowable dimensions of a carry on bag is 16x12x11

Your 21incher may be rejected!!! What do other people say??? :?:

I called American airlines and tehy told me what was on their web site indicating demensions totallying 45 inches were correct. I told them to email me a confirm and they don't do such a thing. I called Austin about the demensions they show in their letter and they said go by what American Airlines says.

Wish someone who has done the travling already would shed some light one tis issue.

singer-

carryone-that 23in. bag sounds find if you keep it within 30-35 lbs. I think the dimensions for all carryon are 21 by 36 in. Your laptop should be ok as long as it can fit in one of those laptop bags you buy at any computer store.

check-in- you can bring the biggest luggage pieces you can buy, just as long as they don't weigh more than 70lbs. total. Sometimes they'll let you go over a little but this depends on individual flights.

AA Eagle form PR- Keep in mind that this is a small plane but it is not as archaic as you might imagine. This is the 21st century, afterall.

Welcome to Ross University School of Medicine, I hope you are very determined, dedicated, and focused because you will need it. And please, please don't be one of these students who think their 'crap don't stink' and everyone else is an 'idiot'. Humbleness will carry you a long way and make your stay here much more pleasant.

I am travelling on ATA and AA to get to Dominica.... and they both told me that I can have a carry on and 2 pieces of luggage ... 70lbs each.... for a grand total of 140lbs. Does that sound right? I think i've read from the earlier posts that only 70lbs of total weight is allowed. I will call my airlines again to make sure, but I just wanted to throw this out there because many of you have experienced this and I dont want to be charged $$.

As a father of a second semester son who accompanied him in August from Newark airport this is the low down on luggage.

1-Depending on whre you depart in the USA the rule is two check in luggage totalling 70 pounds. I had 75 pounds in the luggage but they didn't reject it in Newark. It was checked through to Dominica so there was no problem. If you have to spend the night in Puerto Rico you have to check in the luggage again and it might be weighed again. My suggestion keep heavy things that are small like batteries in one section of a luggage so you can remove it if they weigh the luggage and put them in your pockets.

2-Carry on-You can take a computer bag on the plane to Dominica and it should fit under the seat. A 21 inch bag will be fit overhead in the US planes but on the American Eagle plane they will take the luggage before you board the plane and give you a ticket to retreive it when the plane lands.

3_Only very small items fit overhead in the American Eagle plane..

4 Most important when coming home from Dominica they do weigh checked in items so be careful.

Good luck

just to let any/all know, AA posted a notice that they would allow 2 70lb bags to be checked per person on international flights to certain places-the caribbean being one of those places. i asked and they said that they up the allowance in order to accomodate holiday and seasonal travelers. they said that these times occur throughout the year and to contact AA in order to find out if you are traveling during these dates.

It doesn't apply on American eagle flights to Dominica

when you talk to the airlines, the only way to get the correct info is to call the san juan aiport american eagle desk. dont call american eagles general number or AA. they will tell you their general info, which is worng. they will not charge you for extra stuff, they will make you leave it on the counter in san juan. my roomie a few years back had to choose between his microscope and microwave oven. he left the oven, later said he should have left the scope! it also depends on your flight. if you come in like 5 weeks early, when the plane is empty, they are pretty lax about the regs. but when the students are coming and going, they are sticklers, as this is the onlt time the planes are full to the brim. remember, they are small plane, and its all about space and weight. they cant take too much and still get off the ground.

for big planes like a 747, you are allowed to check in two bags of 70 lbs each. HOWEVER, for a small plane like the american eagle that you will be taking to come in to dominica, you are only allowed a TOTAL OF 70 LBS between the two checked-in bags. so regardless of where you're coming from, the important thing to note is that you will all be ending up in a small plane coming to the island, and that is the main restriction that will apply to you. in the seven times that i've travelled to and from dominica, i was able to get away with overweight luggages UP UNTIL THIS LAST TIME two weeks ago. the supervisor at the american airlines counter told me that it was because american airlines had a big meeting on this thing and they are now stricter on the luggage limitations for dominica. they all know us now, and they all know that we take tons and tons of food over here, and american eagle has cracked down on it. so beware. of the 8-10 people i know who flew out of lax and a few from new york and florida, none of them got through with overweight luggages. we were all asked to trim them down. :(

Be aware that of the students who came in with me on my flight. About 70% of them had luggage that did not arrive with them. Some had one piece, some had none. The missing luggage did arrive 4-7 days later. So plan accordingly. Also be aware that the overhead compartment on the aa eagle flight is much smaller than those found on larger planes.

Just remember, they weigh your bags, but not you. I found it helpful to wear a light jacket with pockets and cargo pants! You can fit a hell of a lot of little extras and weighty objects that might come in handy on the island. You might also wear your walkman, etc. if you're taking one.
Good luck to all going down soon.

it applies to flights to carribbean islands, but like i said, only during certain dates. my wife and i had 225 pounds between 4 bags in addition to what we had with our carry ons.

its rare where anyone gets that much stuff on the plane. interestingly, the comment from haggus is so true! I had a classmate first semester who arrived at the airport wearing like 4 layers of cargo panst and 7 shirts! pockets of all were full! I couldnt believe he could even walk with the stuff he had. also, back then, the airport wasnt air conditioned. as a result, while we waited in customs, he was drenched in sweat!

Maybe before 9/11 you could probably stuff all the extras in your pockets, but now it would look mighty suspicious and I wouldn't count on that. Can you imagine what they might think if I have 50 pairs of acid filled batteries in my pockets! I am flying about 10 days before classes begin..... do you think the flights might be filled with students then?

yes, most new students come down here 1-2 weeks before classes start so there's a big chance that your flight might be full of students. ...and, unfortunately, the more students you have on your flight, the higher chances of luggages being left behind at puerto rico because some students (although fewer now) are still getting away with overweight luggages.

just remember: pack 2 days worth of clothes, toiletries, and other essentials in your carry-on, in case your luggage gets delayed.
