Things you can/can't take...list from TSA and current as of 5-16-05.
If the guy who likes to play with swords is interested, he can stash them in his checked luggage...
Pepper spray also has to be checked...

Kill two birds with one stone... Get a big 'ol Mag Lite; the kind that take 3 or 4 D-sized batteries. A smack on the side of the head with one of those is much better a deterrent anyway...

leave the extra crap at home.
if you really need protection, buy a machete here, and keep it in your backpack.

Your legs will protect you better. Run!!!
My friend was walking home on Moo Cow trail one night. He saw a guy jumped out of the bush. My friend turned around and ran. My friend is very buff and knows martial art but running is better choice.

Actually Pepper Spray/Mace is perfectly legal to have in the checked luggage as long as it meets the requiremnts (less than 4 fl oz and has safety mechanism, one canister per person.) You just need to make sure pepper spray/mace are legal to possess at your final destination where you will regain physical possession of your checked luggage. I travel/fly frequently and I've never had problems checking in my old service weapon and pepper spray whenever I fly. My old drill sarge always said that if you are carrying your gun, you should always try to have a less-than-lethal option available to preserve the "use of force continuum." In the Caribbean, this means carrying a coconut along with your machete. =)

People, if you feel the need to have protection so that you can sleep at night that's fine. But please don't make this place seem like it's the wild wild west!!! I have been here for almost a year now and not once have anyone "jumped out of the bushes" on me. The locals here are very very very nice. Respect their home, interact with them, learn a thing or two and you just may end up with some lifelong friends as I have.
Thanks and best of luck to everyone.

I asked the head of security about pepper spray when I arrived. He said that it is actually illegal to carry here, however, he advised to carry it and be discreet. He said that defending yourself with anything is allowed if you are attacked, so the fact that you did it with a prohibited item is outweighed by your right to defend yourself. He also said that you can carry a knife up to four inches, if you choose.

ok but what about a katana...you know, kill bill style?
yea, pepper spray is ilegal there, but they sell that bug spray, "bop", which is horrible stuff(spray it in your apartment, the bugs leave, and then you have to!). get the rare troublemaker in the face with that stuff and they will NEVER bother you again!
Yes, and they'll prolly never have normal kids again.
