Hey Gang,
Just completed my 1st week of clincals. I was "fortunate" enough to start with Psych at KMC and I must say that I am really pleased thusfar (and not only because my residents send me home at 2PM...).
For all of you (self included) that knocked Dr. J's med psych, I have to say that she is RIGHT ON. I did my first biopsychosocial assesment on a patient the other day on rounds with one of the visiting UCLA Psych Residency Directors and was able to keep up with the residents with no problem.
My team is awesome and I follow one attending, an R2, and 4 R1's who are really into teaching and discussion about our patients. So far, I've had the opportunity to follow 4 patients, present them at morning rounds, do SOAP notes (including assessment and planning!), and have a great time doing so. Psych in practice is infinitely more interesting than book learning!
BTW, my psychopharm sucks tremendously, and I have to fight to keep up with it. I still have two hours or so to do my nightly reading, then wake up and do it all over again.
Hopefully, all my rotations will go this well (probably not!), but it sure is nice to be back in the hospital again!
Aloha,

this is such a knockoff of my "first day in clinicals" thread...
Stop giving them "hope" and "life after the rock" stories.

Aloha,
Have you walked into the psych room yet with your Darth Vader helmet and shouted for the interrogation droid and the location of the secret rebel base?

KMC = Kansas Medical Center (University)?
that would be kinda cool, but i would hate to live at home w/ my parents for the time of the rotation...
if it is KUMC and you get time to go out let me know i will be home for break and you could always go down to the plaza and westport w/ us...

Well you know I would love to be with you in the Psych wing, but I like hanging out in the ER much more. Although my hours are much longer (6:30-6+), I am finally getting used to the schedule. Can't get much reading done though. Oh well. They know that Trauma Surgery is a tough schedule so they go easy on the pimping.
So Jeff why haven't I seen you in the hospital at all since the second day? Did you drop out? ,or get admitted?

Jeff has been relegated to learning medicine almost an hour away...hehehe. As for Psych...I am really enjoying it (perhaps some counter transferance on my part?!). I don't know what you mean by me leaving at 2PM daily...honestly. I take my work home with me because that's what the voices tell me to do. Statue of Liberty!

What are the two starting dates for Kern Medical Center? Just was wondering when is a good time to take the USMLE to ensure to get a spot at KMC. Please shed some light. Thank you.

the only one sort of set in stone is the July start date. The one might be Jan.
But seeing as you haven't even started yet, I wouldn't worry about the USMLE test date this soon. Just take it when you are good and ready.

Aloha,
Speaking of the Statue of Liberty and, er, her torch.... I just saw something in another thread; that you completely forgot to tell us that you SET SOMEONE ON FIRE your first day of clinicals!?! What the crap? It's "do no harm" not "do know harm", you realize?
Gotta go, the CIA are watching with their cameras in my yard...
