As potentially damaging/racist as the question a Caucasian American would asks 'are there any Caucasians going to Ross'; it is equally wrong for any non-Caucasian person to ask "are there any Arabic, Asian, African, going to Ross". This type of ignorance works both ways and needs to be avoided.

But yes, there are many Arab-Americans at Ross (palestinians, egyptians, etc.).

Dude, your too sensitive!!! I am not arab-american by the way!!! I was born and raised in the middle east. Try to learn something before you go opening up your big mouth. And so what if you say "are there any white people coming down", because by the looks of it, that might be a good question considering the "make up" of ross university. Seems as though my friends tell me there are more indians than whites. So it would be fine for you to ask. Stop bringing race into everything!!! It gets old and sickening.

Though I have no desire to become embroiled in race debating, I feel the need to respond because this issue irks me. This post is quite common on these forae. When I went down to Ross it did not even enter my mind what the racial makeup of the student body might be nor did I give a rats ****.I was there to go to medical school. Period. I was not worried if there "were others like me." This question only bothers me because of the cancer that is political correctness. Like homerbrave metioned, if a caucasian-american (and I laugh as I type that phrase) were to ask such a question, how would others respond? Only when we can be honest with each other will we truly have acceptance. yes, I am a white male, if you are wondering. Focus less on who is on the island and more on what's on the island...and thats the opportunity to pursue one of the noblest professions in the world.

i think its important that people have assurance that there will be a group like them so that they dont feel all alone. thats not racist. personally, im white but i really dont care if there are any whites at the school i'll be attending. i like being around people from different races and cultures.

You know, I think in all fairness, asking if there is a certain ethnicity is an OK question. Stop and think about it. Different ethnic groups enjoy certain foods, drinks, music, dance, etc. I personally wouldn't want to go to a place where I felt totally alone, although my kid was driven to do it. If your passion to become a doc overshaddows your feeling of aloneness, it doesn't matter. Please don't let tempers flair...just think if you were a strict vegetarian or religious belief. Or what if you had a killer collection of ethnic music, but you didn't want to lug the cd's down there unless you could enjoy it with someone with similar taste. Or what if you had an unusual sexual preference and couldn't feel you could live in a diverse environment for 16 months without someone with similar values. In all fairness, it's an ok question to ask...and answer. What you PREFER and what you ACCEPT are two different values. If you have a choice (6 of one and half a dozen of another) of going to 2 different schools, and you "like" Arabs and one school has a dozen and one school has none...IT'S OK to ask and pick the school that has Arabs.

On the other hand, if the question is asked for prejudicial reasons...you should be striPped naked and dragged through ground glass. :) As you become a responsible health care professional, you will learn to become color-blind and embrace cultural diversity....but you'll still have your own preferences....AND THAT'S OK.

i attended a peace conference in germany and i was eager to find other americans initially.....its a comfort zone we all have.....it would be damaging if the kid didnt want to be friends with you bc you were white.....if you're saying that when you get thrown into a completely different situation where you are teh minority (and im not minority, im white, im speaking in general terms.....such as being an american in a place where people didnt like americans) its common to seek others like yourself out

If you were born and raised in the Middle East do you plan on returning there to practice medicine?

come on now, I think you know the answer to that question. LOL And I don't blame him for wanting to meet people who have a smiliar background, it has to be a hard transition. But going to Ross should make it a little easier, given the diversity there, as long as people can tolerate and appreciate different types of people....LOL if someone thinks that he is going to associate with only people who have the same background, then damn, they are obviously going to have a tough time in medicine in the US. Be tolerable of everone else without losing your ties to where you come from, which is what makes you unique.

I am a very social person, and wanted to make some friends of my own background in order to have someone right away that I may relate to. I will eventually make other friends but it is good to know people that one can relate to and eat similar foods, and get to know. Either way, I hope to make lots of friends from different races and backgrounds. I just hate political correctness because it restricts one from saying anything these days. I cannot even call my garbage man that without some stupid neighbor wanting me to refer to him as a sanitary engineer. Well, he is not an engineer for God's sake!!! My cousin is an engineer whom studied 5 years in college to earn that title. So, where is the political correctness in that example everyone?

JPFL81, thanks for standing up for what's right. You said it perfectly Hope to meet you on campus and have a good week. bye
