To those of you who have done research in your clinical years.. Was there enough time during your rotations to do it? or did you have a schedule of every other day in the lab or something? or did you take some time off? Also, how did you come across profs that were doing research while you were doing your rotations?

Thanks,
viraj

Most of the research in clinical years is clinical research. Reviewing charts to look at outcomes in various conditions. Analyzing patient data etc. Most teaching hospital encourage residents to do research, and students can often get involved with that. Many of the professors do research as well. You will do this mostly in your after-hours time. Some rotations have a significant amount of free time during the day. You won't be doing much bench research. Clinicians just don't do much basic science stuff. It won't be hard for you to find a project to latch on to. G

during clinical years, i have done two types of research. the first was basically working with my department on different clinical studies they were working on. this involved looking at charts, gathering ultrasound data, patient visits, etc...this fit in pretty well with my clinical duties. in fact, most of this stuff was done while on call over the weekend.

the other was literature review that i did for a conference.

if you are talking more about the basic science or bench research, then i would think it would be a bit more difficult, but certainly doable. depends on how bad your school kills you during rotations. at my school, it would be easy, though, to get an afternoon or two cleared for research.
