Hey y'all,

I was wondering what the likelihood of having wireless access in our dorm room would be in the new dorm. Yes, I am referring to the fact that some dorms can maintain a connection, and also to the likelihood of people within the dorms splitting a connection through a wireless router.

sd4 is build already??? wow that was fast.

anyway u can get internet in your rooms if you want to pay for it you have to call the school and they set stuff up with cable and wireless but its not cheap. also if you want it to be wireless you have to get your own wireless router or buy one from them.

Do many students actually do this? Do any people get it and split it with people in the nearby rooms?

SD 4 is not done yet.
not many people split it. save some money and if u need internet just walk a few seconds to a place that has the access.

I was under the impression that the internet was really slow? I mean it usually takes me overnight to download larger files like movies and stuff....and that's with faster internet...

Actually the school's internet access will be faster than C&W that you get in the room, because that will be DSL
Technically, you're not suppose to use the school's connection to download movies and stuff, but people do it.

as far as speed goes...it varies. depending on how many users are online and what they are doing online (streaming videos need a continuous amount of bandwidth, thus if a lot of people are streaming, expect very slow connection.)

Yeah it can take days with the connection -- max d/l throughput somewhere around 30kbps.

Not many... I think there were 3 or 4 wireless routers in SD1 last term, but that's enough to cover 20+ rooms (out of 84). The wireless really only goes 1 room in any direction because of the concrete walls. I won't have wireless in my room next term, so if you want to set it up, I'd be happy to share the cost. (Goes for OP too... whose question I think I answered, if not let me know.)
