...from Julestx: If you're shipping your printer TAKE THE INK CARTRIGES OUT! Apparently many printers have been ruined this way. As far as bringing stuff down, it depends on wheter or not you're in the dorms. If so, then the list in the Student Orientation guide should suffice. If you're renting an apartment (like me! ), it depends on whether it's fully furnished or not. Other than that, here's my short list of stuff to bring:

Passport
Paper ticket out of SXM
MEIO Acceptance letter
Passport sized photos
Remaining textbooks I haven't shipped
Clothes
Scrubs
Dissection Kit
Laptop
DVDs
CDs
X-Box
Scuba Gear

I think that's exceeding the 70# checked baggage restriction, however I've decided to fork over $100 for an additional 70# bag for a total of 3 (two allowed check-ins plus one additonal)...it costs me less this way than to have it shipped! Hope this helps, and see you in a few weeks! :D

I just plain wouldn't ship a printer down here period. Unless it is a fancy-schmancy jet-laser-50ppm color jobbie that you can't live without (I dunno why you couldn't) I don't think it's worth it.

You can buy a decent printer here for $75. My friend shipped hers down here USPS Global Priority and it cost something like $45 to ship, another $10 to pick it up, and when we opened the box, it was in a million little pieces. And it took 3 weeks to boot.

No matter WHAT you ship down here through the US Postal Service, don't let them tell you to pay anything extra for Priority or any of that crap, thinking it will get here any quicker whatsoever. It will still take three weeks, even with Global Priority. Keep in mind that the USPS can take your money and promise you anything, but once the package is in the hands of the Antillean Mail Service, the USPS can't do jack about tracking it, speeding it up, or ensuring its safe treatment. Any extra money you spend on Global Priority is simply lighting a match to the currency. the regular US mail gets things here, just don't ship breakables or anything you need in less than a month. My $.02

The best way is FedEx, if you can afford it. The only option is overnight or 2-day delivery, and it's an arm and a leg.

Good luck! :D

Call the airlines and ask about their policy concerning extra boxes. Also, check how full your flight will be. If it is really full, they may not let you bring extra boxes even if you're willing to pay :( We wish we had brought a couple of the many extension cords we had. And the charger for the cell phone would have been nice...

I should probably post this as an original thread...

I left on 5 July for Montserrat via San Juan and landing in Antigua. I had a donated Lifepak 12 IN THE ORIGINAL BOX AND SEALED, and American stated they had a 'boycott' on all boxes.

Sooo, after asking the supervisor, her supervisor and getting nowhere... they suddenly turn around and say "you can buy a bag to pack it in for $3O". I was relieved to pay the $30 for a $10 duffel, just to get the equipment with me, however I think this is a pretty underhanded thing to do. (especially when I see not only boxes but shrink-wrapped lawn chairs on the AA carousel in Antigua)

If you have to pack anything that is large, go buy your own cheap duffel and save yourself a few $$ and the agony of repacking it at the airport.

Don't forget the stuff you need for:

the beach
hiking

including a good hat and sunglasses and sunscreen.

Invest in a really good pair of sandals that you can hike in.

A swiss army knife has the indispensable corkscrew, but they are almost cheaper in Philipsburg unless you find a good sale or already have one.

What is the cost of batteries like? I'm mostly interested in AA's, AAA's, (to use in my walkman, mp3 player, discman....)

Faith, kudos on the Douglas Adams quote!!! (did you know they're making a movie based on hitchhiker's?)

Cheers,

Everything there is more expensive, if you have something that eats batteries, consider a charger...

No, I didn't know about the movie - should be good.

They're a lifesaver.

Batteries here are expensive, I know they are in the States, too, but even worse here.

I just went shopping today at Cost-u-Less and paid about $9.00 for 8 D's and about $7.00 for 12-AA's.

That's about what I pay here at Safeway. (side note: I don't think I've ever bought 8 D batteries for anything before.
