Hello:

Although the basic science catalog mentions nine required books as part of first semester's curriculum, do professors cover all of the required books or do they select major points from each textbook to discuss in their lectures. What is the lecture format at Saba? Powerpoint? Chalkboard Instruction? Any feedback will be appreciated, particularly from those students presently on Saba.

I know that I've typed this before, so if you already read it before you can just skip to the next reply:

For first semester, to err on the conservative side of things I would buy all the recommended books with the exception of the informatics book and the study guide for embryology. Don't buy any of the recommended books.
I would also get the BRS for anatomy, and the BRS for Embryology, as well as First Aid for the USMLE Step 1. It may be wise to get the BRS series volume for every course...
To be honest, some people used their books in the 1st semester classes, and some people never even took them out of the shrink wrap and relied solely on their notes. But it's hard to know which kind of student you are until you are well underway here.
Bring at least two boxes of gloves for anatomy, minimum. Bring scalpel blades. That is all the dissection kit you will need. Bring at least two sets of scrubs. If you do that, you will be fine even if we get new professors, which Saba does every so often, sometimes with little notice. (Please note that I have been very happy with the quality of instruction, though!)
Most professors use powerpoint slides to present their lectures, hence the necessity of a laptop to follow along in class and add your own notes right on the slide itself. Some professors also like to use the dry erase boards quite a bit and combine that with power point presentation. I recommend bringing a few spirals and 3 ring binders and loose leaf paper, and a hole puncher, pencils, a pencil sharpner, and more pens and pencils than you think you will need. You can get all that stuff here but it will cost you more.
