LIAT really is no different from any other carrier in the Caribbean- I've lost my bags on US Air, my roommates have lost their bags on Air Jamaica, and AA, so its a crapshot any way you look at it
well this is what i read in a thread and i was wondering how does the airline repay u for ur lost?
any feedback would be appreciated
Thanx

u might wanna contact the specific airline for that question. some will reimburnse you up to a certain amount and some will do more. it depends on the airline. call them up and ask.

I dont know if this helps, but if any of you are flying on Air Jamaica either directly out of JFK or on one of their other flights. I would get to the airport early. The flight leaves at 7 am from JFK. I always get there at 4 or a little bit before. I know you get bored in the airport it sucks, but you will get your bags. If you get there later, after 5, esp during carnival your bags aren't going to arrive with you. I dont know that many people that ever lost their bags totally on AJ. Im sure it has happened, but its just more likely that they are a few flights behind you.

Thanks for the heads up!
As for LIAT losing baggage. They usually don't lose baggage, its just usually delayed a day or two. So keep your hopes up!

Very interesting to see myself quoted!
They rarely lose the bag forever, you usually get it a day or so later. If they do lose it forever (it does happen), the rules for compensation for foreign travel is a little different than domestic compensation- it goes by wait and the max you get for a 70lb bag is in the neighborhood of US$ 700. I did have someone tell me that when they lost their bags, they were able to neogiate a better compensation package because they weren't the typical tourist losing bags, but that there was a greater impact because they were expats (though I think this did become a legal matter, so I guess it depends on how serious you want to get)
Someone noted that if you get the JFK early enough and on the non-stop to GND, you always get your bags--not so, said roommate lost her bags on the non-stop, they were "overcarried" back to JFK, because they weren't removed from the plane(it returns to JFK) and evidently this is a common enough problem because there was a note ON the bag saying that baggage handlers need to double check for accidental overcarriage!!
