Three people I worked with in a lab are all now doing their residencies and gave me the same advice when I told them I was going to med school: start studying for Step I the day you begin your first semester. Not intensive study but a daily look over one of the review books. All of them did well on it (235+) and were adamant that I should take the same approach. My question is, how common is this? And if it's a good idea, which book(s) should one look at? The only one I've heard of is the First Aid series. I'd appreciate your input if you've taken it/are about to take it.

i got the same advice from friends who went to US med schools and i did the following. i got first aid for the boards, i used it to review for exams and added notes to it as i went through the first 2 years of sgu. it was a great help while i was studying for boards. i would strongly suggest this to anyone and everyone who is going to sgu...buy first aid, take notes in it as you go along...rock the boards...in that order...it works.

I agree, start memorizing, at least, these two books from day 1:
1) First Aid
2) Step Up

A classmate of mine purchased and started doing Qbank questions from day 1 of classes and continued through the first two years of school. He did very well on the Step1.

Another classmate of mine did the Pre-Test series (usmleasy.com) throughout the first two years of school. She also did very well on her Step1.

First Aid is a hard read to memorize from day 1. If you dont know the concepts behind it, its worthless. So you go along your semesters and memorize from it AFTER you nailed the concepts down.

Qbank is 2100 Questions, I think after a couple months you can finish them all. Then when Step 1 time comes, you put yourself at a disadvantage while studying because you've been exposed to the exact same questions before. Your score will be inflated and you wont get an accurate assessment of where you stand Pre -Step 1.

Thats just my opinion at least.
