They have a school calender....but usually there are alot of changes occuring...DOTEs English prg. is always at constant change...and so are the rules and regulations...but basiclly:

school starts in late aug/sept...(if you are planning to attend a intensive course in hungarian u have to be there 6 or7 weeks before, which is recommended if u dont want to be bothered with hungarian classes during the sem.)

Christmas break(including your examination period) starts around 14 of Dec...but you have all ur exams left...so the lenght of ur Christmas break depends on u...the second semsters starts in late Jan/ early Feb....and the summer vaccation the end of May...you will have until the end of June to finnsih ur exams...or any remaining exams have to be passed in the second examination period which is just 1 or 2 weeks before school starts again.

I think that you will find ............ if you look this word up in the dictionary, that you will discover that this word doesn't mean as you say, you are simply spouting rubbish. Also, healthcare professionals ( thats doctors, nurses etc. to you ) would never use the word retard out of context, as that could mean the end of a good career for some professionals, This clearly shows that you are never going to be an MD (and im definatly guessing that you are not one!!).

No, i am not upset atall, just happy that you have realised that you used the term out of context. :D, the only time you would use such a word, is yes thats right, when diagnosing a patient, as being mental retarded is actualy a condition. (you obv. wouldn't know that).

Grading system:
ECT
1:"fail" 2:"pass" 3:"good" 4:"very good" 5:"excellent"


1st year 1st semster
Biophys: has a Final Exam (if you do well in the self-control tests,SCT; during the semester u can get alot of bonus points and skipp the minimals and biostat part)
Chem: Same deal as biophys

(the rest of the subjects in 1st year 1st semster are a joke, so dont worry about them)

1st year 2st semster
Anatomy: If your avreage is equal or above grade 6 from the SCTs you are exempted. (final exam is in that case in 2 year)
Med Gen. : If your avreage score is equal or above 60% from the SCTs you are exempted.
Molecular Bio: If your avreage score is equal or above 65% or 80 (Im not sure) from the SCTs you are exempted )final exam is in that case in 2 year)
Cell Bio: u can only get bous points...no exemption here :)

if you have an avreage of 4 or 5 during the first semster it leads to a bonus where you a charged less for the 2nd semster, and if u keep u grades up then u keep getting discount like that...but check the school bulletin for that.

In the above lines what do you mean by grade? As per your last post in Debrecen 5 stand for EXCELLENT. Is 6 = SUPER EXCELLENT??

Yeah, final grade 5 stands for EXCELLENT, but during the Self-controls (during the sem.) you are graded between 1 to 10.

So if your avreage is 6 (from the SCTs) you will be exmpted from the end of term exam (the final exam in Anatomy is in 2nd year), 6 (or 60%) translates to final grade 3.

Grade 6=60% result, is pretty easy to achive.

Anatomy 1 is scheduled for 1st year 2nd sem., minimum grade 6 (SCTs) is needed to be exempted.

Anatomy 2 is scheduled for 2nd year 1 st sem., minimum grade 8 (SCTs) is required for beeing exempted from the written part (everyone has to take the oral exam)

As far as I know there is no online version, you just have to wait until you arrive to DOTE, or maybe you can ask the agent (if u are using one...) to get u one.

The ONLY thing thats good with Debrecen and DOTE is the dormintories at Moricz Zsigmond...they are fresh, newly built and well equiped...whats even better than that is the fact that the staff speaks english...a room is equiped with study area, bathroom+bath, kitchen and balcony.... costs 60 000 HUF a month (ext. bills included, exceept internet ).

Moricz Zsig. is the street address...and to answer your second question, there is a nearby cantina...but its not so good...or hygienic for that matter...its mostly Hungarian out of town students who eat there...but you can always order some food from a joint...but in Debrecen u cant get any good pizza...or hamburger (except Mc....and McNasty has monopoly in Debrecen...so u cant find a BK) and Chinese food (doesn’t matter what they say...its not Chinese food...its Hungarian crap served with cheap soya sauce..)..

If you want to have a nice night out with dinner and everything there are a few "fancy" places with quite international menus....but they are basically clones of each other with average quality of the food...just more expensive then regular joints...
Your best choice is probably one of the smaller restaurants who serve genuine Hungarian cuisine...those places usually have fresh & tasty dishes...

Man, its up to you if you want to bring a laptop and a printer...its useful to have since there are presentations and things of that nature that you need to prepare for diffrent subjects...but it's not a requirement...and you can always buy something there...I know I don't seem to be a big fan of Debrecen and DOTE...but its not like they are cavemen...

I dont rember the exact date, I only know that the "hungarian intensive course" starts in August and that the semester starts in Sept.

I have a laptop I brought from states (remember there is a differeent electrical plug here AC 220) I bought my printer here at Media Markt, but there are a lot of store with pretty good electronics. Also go to Magellan.com (I think) they are a travel store and I bought my electrical adaptors there and maybe a converter if you need that too. Real cheap and they ship quick. You can get broadband internet for about 25$ month, but there's also ADSL, etc. Most places by the school have these services. I did all my banking by internet, etc. so I think it's essential you have your own computer and Internet at apartment. But the school has a lot and the new library will open in September which is supposed to be a "space station"..so you'll have plenty of computer hardware at your disposal. GL

Just wait 'til you get here. Every class has notes for their class, and thats what you need to get. Within the first 2-3 weeks all these notes will be flying around, so make sure to hang out at Fadi's copy shop, and you'll be in good shape..and be friendly with your group. Don't come here thinking you can do it all alone. Those people are no longer here....GL

They tend to be the best organized and have all the material you will need...or they can get in a short time. Work hard, be friendly..and remember wherever you are coming from..this is a diverse multicultural school where everybody gets along and works hard to become docs. You'll make some interesting friends to say the least..GL

Just follow Tiza's advice, you dont have to worry about everything, just take it one day at the time...and ernjoy the summer.

Just rember, the Israeli's and Iranians at that school are the key, they always have all the essential notes, and they have a tendency to keep it for themselves...ironically...although their two countries dont get along very well their people seem to be tight anywhere they are...so get some friends from these two groups, because the notes handed out in the classes are only lecture/seminar notes, but you will also need to get hold of old exams and various other notes written (in DOTE, some of these notes are essential) by students and others.

Sadly the climate at DOTE is in such a fashion that some people sabotage for others, one way is removing notes from Fadi's shop...and Fadi is just keeping the notes as a service, so he dosent have control over what passes over the desk, and thats why you need to make friends with the Jewish-Persian Syndicate at the school :))

Salam. You are about to start Medical School. Its August 23rd and you don't know when the first day if school is? Call them, email them, (you probably should be here by now to arrange housing, residency permit, etc. 10 years ago, you could lazily come to Debrecen and ** you time away for 2-3 weeks. Not anymore. We have an excellent, motivated student body, and if you're not ready, you'll be left behind. You've seen my earlier post. You seem sincere and intent on being a good student. Don't be a slacker. And warning, there will be slackers here, and they all hang out together, and tell each other how great they are because they get to repeat first year again!! Good luck

ok guys, Fadis shop is helpful and informative, but this goes out for 6th year people, definitely study BOOKS in addition to those notes in his shop, esp Psychiatry, Peds and Neuro especially in his shop is not nearly enough, there are some good notes for neuro going around, much better than those, so hopefully someone can spare him a copy of them, otherwise books books books, or kaplan USMLE Step 2 CK notes are good too.

You need to get in touch with the English office. Generally you won't be in too bad shape, because most exams are not until the 4-5 week of school, BUt you will miss labs, and you HAVE to make those up. The department (Biophyiscs) is pretty flexible. Are you coming from Middle East? There are lots of ME folks here,a nd maybe you can reach one, so he can mail you notes or something. I'm not in Debrecen now, but will be back in in October. GL

With the English Office he means The Secretary of the English Divsion of the M.D prg at DOTE, who are probably the only ones who can save ur *** if your planning on missing out on school.

The labs u are gonna miss are Chem and Biophys, but I am not sure when they start them, you should check with the school, because if you miss more than two biophys labs then you have failed..thats the offical rules...I dont know how well they follow them.

hey guys.. just wanted to let you all know that I started First Year in early October, and now am finished with the University. My first year began in October, dont worry about being late - but it should definitely not extend more than this end of September and very early October, like when I started, only the immigration office may give you some worries, but there are always connections around the immigration office, its sad the things like this that happen there but they happen occasionally, but at least it helps international students in this perspective. You can pay some twenty eight dollars per hour for extra educational services, and the individual departments should provide this for you, Biophysics and Chemistry. I agree that labs are pretty important, but in the first year the self controls are almost meaningless, or they were when I was in the first year, I never even took a single self control, only the final examinations in the end of semester. Second year they are crucial, self controls that is, as well as third year, but first year they are pretty meaningless. This should change to help motivate and benefit students who would otherwise put off studying throughout the semester, and then cram in the end and pass.

I wouldnt agree with you, the sCTs during first year are crusical if he wants good grades (or just making it easier for himself)...if he does good in the SCTs he can be exempted from the minimals in biophys, biostat in biophys(automatically gives him 15pt at the final) and get some bonuspoints for the final exams, in both biophys and chem.

The lab part depends a little on which mood the department is in, MedChem probably wont give him any problems, but back in my time the Biophys dept where unreasonable...but now I hear that Panyi isnt the "student adviser" anymore, so maybe things have changed, but just to be sure he should check it out.

hey that could be true, I didnt have Chemistry in first year because I was exempt so you are probably correct. Panyi was a bit rude and unpredictable at times, but him being the student advisor may have been an advantage in my opinion - as he was not all that bad, also Vereb, hes not that bad of a guy at all actually, even though he seems like he has a rough exterior. Theres only one guy in that dept who may have wanted to cause serious probs for students but its been so long that I forgot his name, and havent seen him around anyways so assume that he is no longer even in that dept. The problem is when you are directly under them, then they try and act intimidating, would they intentionally cause "serious" probs I am not too sure though - Vereb possibly - although he did help me out once, but hated me and pretty much everyone else in Biophysics, not too sure about Panyi, like I said, I began in early Oct without any difficulties. Guys ----- is it true that Peter Molnar may be the head of Pathology????? he was the WORST at the examinations many years ago, failed almost everyone, and if he is the head then that would be scary. I hope that Prof Nemes stays, as he is the best, but not as good as Gomba. Gomba is by far the best Pathology teacher there, Dr. Deju is good too.

My agent told me that the INDIANS are always late & reach Debrecen by the end of September so the university arrange for a 2 week extra classes for those students. Is it true?

Well, the staff at those two depts (bio and cell) probably never think that they are intentionally causing problems, they see it as learning students discipline, their methods can be argued, but I personally dont think their problems are worse than other dept at DOTE.

The real problem is that they have two student advisors who are really unmotivated and unwilling to help, specially Panyi. I always saw Vereb as someone who was borderline manodepresive, if you wanted something from him you needed to catch him at the right moment.
I can somewhat understand their point of view, they probably feelt that they where way to high in the hireacy to be meddling with the problems of the 1st year students, and the bio/cell dept is kinda a gateway at DOTE, it kinda teaches students how things are done at the schools, so the student advisors gets alot of crap from shocked 1st year students ;)

I have no news about the patho dept, Tiza might know something.

Dr. panyi is out for 2 years at Penn doing research in the US. The above post on Verab is correct. he's moody and a condescending SOB if you don't know the answer. he's smart, but also can be a pain. Know G-proteins and cell signaling and he'll like you a lot better. Try to get as many bonus points you can in bio phyics. it can save you during the finals! GL

I guess you guys are right, I mean bonus points can only help you to pass or to get a higher mark. So selfcontrols are helpful, Panyi in the US? He was a punk at times, he did show attitude, and failed students that he didnt like - ESP if you are male and wear an earing, or chain or something like this, anything that makes you stand out, and then he will target you and take you out, notably on the practical examinations. Just keep to yourself, have a few friends that you can trust, that place is BRUTAL in the first two years - AND FOR GOD SAKES STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO ANNOY YOU OR NAG YOU JUST DO NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THEM - my greatest mistake, being nice to idiots that meant nothing at all whatsoever to me - no problems with that now, as I will hopefully never ever see them ever again, everyone wants to be at the top, and only a few make it, maybe 30 to 40 beyond second year, and there were so many idiots in my year initially that you had to be reasonably smart and then could advance to the next year - not saying that the people that did advance to the next years were not smart, matter of fact the majority they were smart and extremely motivated - very few advanced due to default, just the system accidentally lets them just advance, well when there were 120 or so students, you could just hide behind an idiot, pick one there were almost one hundred - we had about 30 students to 40 advance to third year, well its surely not like that anymore, there are so many smart people who are extremely motivated and cutthroat some of them are, so you have to be extremely smart from day one second number one, one slip up and you will be a repeater - and that includes not only wanting to do well, but making the effort to obtain the proper study materials, once you are out of second and third year you are basically an MD. I am actually glad that I did not begin with the years that are starting now, because I was one of the laziest bums in the first year!

Panyi was born to be a jerk, during my time there he was the only one I had open confrontations with...and after a few disputes he was always helpful, the diffrence between him and Vereb is that Vereb might get all heated up over something pointless, but he knows how far he can go, while Panyi lets the little power he has get to his head.

I agree completly with you in your last post whattupdog, its excellent advice. Anyone going to DOTE needs a few close friends, and just let the others do their own thing, if you dont watch out someone will burn u.
Because that place is really a joke, and it all comes down to ur "luck" seen people study their *** of an fail...and seen people who "studied" a few exams and sat in their cheating think-tank groups and passed.
