Hello,
I would really appreciate it if anyone can suggest a link for applying to
Debrecen University directly. I keep coming across links which call
for going through agents (whose fees are a LOT). Any ideas? Please
reply if you can help:)
Thanks

Yes, i had the same problem when trying to contact the med school, eaven when i got through to the actual university, they just put me on forward to some guy in arabia who wanted $5000 just to proceed with an application.
Yes you can apply direct. BUT call them and tell them to send you the application directly. And as for recruiters, I know the Israeli's and Norwegians pay $500 one time only for help with living arrangements, residency permits, etc. I don't consider that too unreasonable. Anyway, just be persistent and express your interest to apply directly.....and beware other post on this forum..many agents troll the forums fishing for unexpected students. You can directly apply to all the Universities in Hungary..but a lot of foolish people also use an agent, and usually they get burned...szia
University of Debrecen: This is a quote from the web site, so just call them and get the application yourself. GL.

to the Secretariat of the English program also."

I agree wholeheartedly that there are characters here who are dishonest about the application process and looking for students to fool for their profit, you can apply directly, and I am very surprised that the school did not inform you of that, as they are quite efficient and straightforward, so it could have been someone else, you may have called one of the agency numbers posing as the school by mistake, so be careful. The number directly to the University is
int. code to Hungary wherever you are calling from + 3652 447751
good luck.

my point is, that you can apply and get accepted without some huge agency fee.

u r right, one can avoid those agents!!!
Old term- agents new term -recruiters
It is not unusual for a school to have recruiters in other countries to help arrange application, entrance exams, travel, lodging, etc. Even in the states, many colleges send recruiters to all the high schools to try and get students to come to that school. The recruiters do get paid by the school. small fee, only several hundred dollars, BUT some if these old recruiters did tack on extra charges that were unknown to the school. This is a dying practice, and the school frowns on this practice. Law of economics will weed these crooks out. Anyway, at least at Debrecen, you can apply directly. GL

Debrecen is very very good about this - entertaining independent applicants

Small fee?
Debrecen still has agents that take several thousand dollars, (they operate in Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Nigeria, China and Israel) and are operating with the full support of the administration...that’s just a fact.
But officially they support independent candidates, problem is there are several individuals who work in the administration in the English div. who are more or less crocked...with close ties to some of these agents...your best chances are by contacting the two ladies who work in the English Sectr. Office, or by having a friend that is already attending DOTE apply for you.
Of course, the ideal is if you can go down to Debrecen and check it out for yourself, and also get a opportunity to speak to some of the students there, if its as you thought it was u can apply directly.
You are correct, that there are some agents at ALL of these EE schools that try to charge more for their services. After spending several years in Hungary, only the most inept, desperate students and family are willing to "pay" this extra fee, because they think it gets them an advantage. The fact is, after two weeks, that student never sees the agent again (unless he didn't pay) and the student usually fails out anyway. The majority of students here (Norwegain, Israeli) pay about $500 one time fee. There may be some exception, but the above applies to them also. GO TO SCHOOL WEBSITE. IT STATES YOU MAY APPLY DIRECTLY. JUST SAY THATS WHAT YOU WANT. EASY. If you can't be confident enough to do that, you won't have the confidence to make life and death decisions for your patient. GL.

True to some parts, except most Scandinavian students in Debrecen pay a tuition fee of 12000 USD for first year, while the standard tuition fee is 8500 USD (or was it 8700?), the University actively encourage them to go through the agent "responsible" for that part of the world, just as they have one for Canada (+NA) and Iran and Turkey, China etc.
This also why there are individuals from different departments of DOTE who are present at the interviews and at the same time being conjoint with the agent.
Basically this is what agent will do for you:
*Apply and hold a fake selection process.
*Meet students at the airport and transport them to the destined City.
*Organize your living accommodation for the initial period (only the half descent agents do that...)
*Organize different VISA/living permission requirements/applications for the students.
*Maybe provide some poor copies of the 1st semester books.
So, we are not talking about big expenses...but you still have to pay big money for it.
But this doesn’t mean that everyone who goes through a agent are desperate...and believe that she/he cant get accepted with their own merit...some are pushed into deals with agents because some individuals in the English divs. staff at DOTE gives them that impression.
And of course, there are some advantages...your transfer to foreign country can be eased with a help of agent...and some agent (like the one who brings allot of Norwegians to DOTE) have vast connections with the Departments...and can sometime fix minor problems through some questionable methods.
To the class entering in the subsequent years, tuition has been rising, as costs of inflation is rising. But for us that have been here for a few years, our tuition is locked in at the tution rate for our first year. (I agree that agent can be a help in getting settled in a new area. And you may be right that some of the English program office personnel push students to the agents because they are overworked and just don't have time to help everybody individually. With that said, I know that the agents attempt to smooth things over (once again for the unprepared, inept student), but again, and again, it does not make a difference..the student will FAIL the course anyway, and most will transfer schools..and the agent keeps the money. I came to Hungary on my own. Did not need an agent. Do not need an agent to go talk to my teacher because I failed my exam for the 3rd time, did not need an agent to find my apartment or get my residency permit and the english office NEVER asked me to go through an agent when I first arrived..so I'm sorry if you and some of your friends had to go through an agent..the school's official website states you can apply directly...so just do it..thats been my point all along. Just do it! szia

I havent gone through a agent either, which dosent really matter...point is that most people in DOTE have, so your remark regarding everyone who goes through a agent will eventually fail is wrong.
I can only say that you where lucky when u applied...because as you see from this thread everyone gets pushed into agent-deals from the staff...and members of the dept (particullary Med chem, Bio and Cellbio) work with these agents.
I'm not against the legit agent, who charge a small fee for there services and actually help people out...I was only trying to warn potential applicants that some agents will try to charge much more and really give little extra benefit. yes, Since most students are Nonrwegian or Israeli, they do use agents, but there is an alternative there, if a student doesn't want to use an agent. I'm only reacting to several conversations I've had with PARENTS about not having to pay for an agent fee, but they INSIST because they think it will help there son/daughter out. I gave up long ago trying to argue with them. It's their life and $$$, so...anyway..sounds like we are both DOTE students and we know its not the perfect place, but it's not bad either and we'll be MD's in a few years and we'll look back on these years with fondness...I think. I agree, some parents (and students) do think they will get special advantages by going through a agent...but from what I seen these favours come with a price..besides the intial fee they take...VIVA LA CORRUPTION! :dancepar:
but it dosent really matter if DOTE is bad or not..every place has its problems...it always comes down to the student...if you dont like the system in DOTE, or Charles, Prozan...etc...you can always finnish the year and transfer out...(exceept to Budapest...they want people to finnish 3rd year before they allow transfers)

Go to the website or contact the English program office for a catalog of each department. The basic science departments are very research driven, so you may have a chance, but you may have to do split duty and teach in the English program if you are fluent in English. GL

generally websites are RUN by agents.. so be very careful.. if you are interested in applying directly, then go there yourself,.... sometimes even on the phone you will get incorrect information unfortunately..
