So, the caffeteria at AUC. Do you have a meal plan, or do you pay as you go? How much is a typical meal? What all meals do they serve there? :-)

Well, it probably won't kill you or make you sick, but it's not very good either. It is fairly reasonably priced however (like entree and sides and coke for less than $5). As far as I know, it is only open for lunch (please correct me if it has more extended hours), but I'm not sure as I've only been there a few times.

Hmmm, wonder if they're going to ask for volunteers to cook the turkeys again this year?
The cafeteria serves great breakfast, at really cheap prices.
Their lunch however... bleh.
Typical day: Oxtail, chicken leg drowned in extra salt sauce, buttered pilaf, buttered broccoli, and maybe a "bolito" (burrito) if you're REAL lucky.
One thing's for sure the locals who cook our food love their mayo and butter. So they put it on everything they can.

Yeah, like AUC doesn't have bigger stoves and expected the students/faculty/spouses to use their own time and money to not only cook, but serve the Thanksgiving meal...I thought it was quite ridiculous, however the Thanksgiving dinner tasted better that year...

Since St. Marten is not the US they do not celebrate the US Thanksgiving. I believe that the teachers and SGA officers generously donate their time to serve us Thanksgiving as a gift to the students from the staff. Again, I believe that the kitchen staff spends quite a bit of time cooking, hand peeling individually and mashing potatos (or is it potatoes ;) ) as well as preparing side dishes for that day.
I think they had individuals cook the turkeys at home because even though the ovens are larger they are unable to cook that many turkeys to be ready at one time.
I thought the food was good for Thanksgiving and I did appreciate the time and effort that everyone put into it :) . They added an additional touch of decorations on the table (thank you Mrs. B) and desert.:D :D

Of course they don't celebrate Thanksgiving in St. Maarten, that's why AUC offers a lunch for the students. Two years ago, the school made and prepared all of the items for the students, including all of the turkeys. Last year, however, the school asked for individuals (faculty/students/spouses) to assist with cooking the turkeys and to help serve the meals.

Poor Micro! I never offered to make a turkey for several reasons, including the fact that a turkey wouldn't fit in my oven, so j-son didn't have to endure that torture. I hope you got plenty at the Thanksgiving lunch.

Yeah, the school and SGA asked the Spouses club...
Precisely my point! Did SGA ask other clubs on campus as well? I can't remember, but I sure hope so otherwise it sends the message that spouses have nothing better to do than sit around and cook all day. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that people volunteered to help feed the students, but why did the school decide that they didn't want to cook everything themselves considering the Thanksgiving lunch is offered by the school for their students? Besides, that's the way they always had done it in the past.

I think the reasoning behind that was because of some kitchen staff dispute. I could be wrong though.

That would be crazy too since AUC pays them. If AUC wants them to make turkeys you'd think they would have to. I think I remember something like this as well.

no not being serious, but all comedy has some truth behind it. the partners do keep themselves busy...of course i can't comment on directly but just going by what you guys used to talk about it appeared that by the end of the first year you guys got bored...this was shown proportionately by the increased amount of time you saw the married med students "studying" on campus. (between lines-->partner is bored wants to talk things to death..answer=spend more time on campus, and by talk of course i mean a one sided conversation were she talks and you listen trying to keep quiet or yawn or else you have a bonus 30 minute talk on how you can't talk and by talk of course whe means listen)
studying=of course means 15 minutes in the book, 15 minutes on vmd, and 30 minutes on a ultimate tournament lan party, or doom at maho interluded with poker once in a while.......

I try really hard not to do that. At night when Mr islandwife studies, I either read his books or do my own homework. Nevertheless, I doubt I could pass any one of the tests so this is in no way a peeing contest!!! I wouldn't last 1 semester at AUC!) He likes it when I read his books and go over lecture notes so he can explain things to me - it helps him to cement it in his mind. He says it's nice to have a conversation with me about his school work when I have somewhat of a grasp on it. Those conversations are mostly HIM talking and me listening, asking a few occasional questions.

Not if you're smart. I think married guys here have it MUCH easier:
1. Think of all that time single guys spend trying to hook up. Married guys just go home. :)
2. No laundry
3. No trips to cost-u-more or grand marche
4. No upkeep of the homestead
5. No bill-paying, anxiety about finances ('cause most of them don't have a clue about what is really going on anyway)
6. They get a built-in sec'y to do all their clinical apps and research - not to mention all the med school apps were probably taken care of by the wifey anyway. Heck - most married guys don't even write personal statements or applications of any kind!
7. NO CAFETERIA FOOD!! NO FAST FOOD!! (unless they want it.)
All they have to do is study and make us feel special once in a while (so the well doesn't completely dry up). It's the single guys who have it tough. In fact, I think married guys are completely sheltered from the whole 'island experience' by their wives....:|

mr islandwife (by the way i think that name is going to give him a complex) is also first semester.....by far the easiest semester. in fact the amount of free time and simplicity of the classes is in no way comparable to the other semesters. I don't think I'd want to try... Bad memories surfacing of childhood with three brothers... ugh!!! There are very valid reasons why girls think boys are gross you know.
I'm not sure what you were trying to communicate about 1st semester being the easiest. ?? Maybe you thought I was trying to say this school was a cake walk - which is utterly untrue. I just find the reading very interesting. I'm a nerd that way I guess.
Mr Islandwife (what else should I call him with the no names rule?) doesn't read this board, so I am not too worried about him getting a complex. :) He is too busy studying. He occasionally asks me how all these students have so much time to mess around with stuff like this. I just say they are single people with extra time, people in clinicals who want to stay in touch with classmates, or lurkers like me.

Yes, there is some giving and taking, but as a whole, I think married guys have it a little easier. At least mine does, anyway. I try not to get too "chicky" (manipulative, chatty, needy, nagging, crabby) with him. In turn, he tries not to get too outta hand (excessive bodily noises, aloofness, harshness, watch too many sports, the male proclivity toward bad hygeine and wandering eyes). So you see, there are two sides to the deal. The way I figure it, after 15 years of marraige, both parties of any couple deserve a medal for sticking in there and being nice to eachother.

amen to that and swimguys isn;t even married yet and he already knows how it works.... as an engagement present i'l give you some tips that will get you past the 10 year mark:
1) don't argue with her about anything important, if you do and you are wrong which you probably will be, she will bring it up at every decisuion you try to make.
2) learn how to passively listen to the important point sof her 10 minute rants. usually a 30 second spot every 2 minutes accompanied by a grunt or nod of acknowledgement works. this is a great time to review what you will watch today, which teams play this week and calculating out real wheel horsepower figures on american muscle and laughing at the rice burners...just don't luagh to enthusiasticaly or she'l know because there is no way you could be that exited listening to her talk about her best friends pregnancy.
3) always let her win an argument during the first few years. eventually you will learn the master jedi trick and let her think she won the argument while you sit back in your big leather chair, big screen TV, and home soda fountain machine, with beer tap option, while she goes out to pick up a pizza in your porsche that she said you would never get. now after she 'wins' an argument it is important that you allow her to drive your car, i know it goes against all things testosterone but beleive me th erewards are well worth the agony of someone else driving your car....
4) this is the bonus, when she syas something is your fault, no matter how utter psychotic and loose your association to the event in question is just admit fault revert to yoru jedi mind trick maneuver and have a beer.
i could share all my other maneuvers but she hasn't caught on to those yet.... i always get my way...marriage is good you just gotta know how to work it

That's OK. It took me a while to respond because I was in the kitchen wearing a bikini while I bake him a birthday cake AND peach pie. Oh ya, he's downstairs, in the only air conditioned, quiet room in the house, studying - undisturbed.
But you're right - if he gets too outta line, he won't 'get any' as you put it. I have to admit the areas in which you are correct.
I may not be perfect, but at least I know the difference between chicken and tuna.

i like being married....once you figure out the ins and outs and accept the fact that women are basically insane you adapt, evolve, become domesticated and live happily.....
here is another trick:
1) when she asks you to do something you REALLY don't wanna do and would basically give up your god given right to the remote to avoid you act as if you want to do the task but you go ahead and screw it up so enormously that she will never ask you again. i haven't washed clothes, dishes, or done any house repairs since the white to pink incident of 99, the stained dish fiasco of 96, or the broken wall/window/and dog through the screen door debacle of 95

Dude.. for some reason, I still can't operate copiers ... I got laughed at at my old job for that even though they'd call me for any computer problems.
