Hi. I'm a new student starting this August. I will be bringing my iBook rather than getting a PC laptop to take down there. I have put a PC emulator and Windows XP on there, just in case it turns out to be necessary to be able to run Windows programs. However, I was wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of regarding Mac compatibility with networks and ISPs down there. I have heard that one or another of the ISPs don't support Macs, but that information was not given to me by a Mac user, so I don't know if it is reliable. Please let me know what your experience has been. Thanks.

Lots of people with macs...no problems. Check with microphage and/or skipper, secret.asian.man, or a ton of others.
BTW, I am not a mac user...:)

ALoha,
I'm not a mac user but I use one. Last I heard, there was a problem with getting on the network drive but everything else is fine. The workaround for this is to buy a USB thumb drive(256mb at the very least, 512 mb recommended) and plug that into any of the PCs in the computer lab and just copy it from there to ur thumb drive.
I'd also suggest getting windows 98 for Virtual PC as it runs fairly quickly on an ibook vs the crawling speed of XP on an emulator. I haven't encountered a medical program that wouldn't run on 98 yet.
BTW, skipper uses a Sony.. it's an Apple-wannabe and Secret.asian.man defected to the Microsoft side. Worst of all... he got a Compaq!

I am a mac user... i have the newer PowerBook... i havent had any problems finding work arounds for all the previous semester mac user's problems... The notes drive works no problem, i connect whenever i need to... i actually gave the IT ppl here at the school instructions on how to do it, so thats no longer an issue
as for internet, no probs setting up the "gangster" proxy the school is using (i hate it though)
as for medical software... VirtualPC should work just fine or you can revert to Classic OS9 (but surprisingly VPC is faster and i like it better personally)... I run WinXP, but i have an extremely trimmed down version... i think its something like 150MB and its really quick, well quick enough to run the Netter's and HistoTime CDs
BTW- personally i havent run into problems w/ the ISPs (i havent been w/ any except via school network...but if you do outside, ie, caribserv, idl, etc... try and get an ETHERNET modem and not a USB one. that would give you a lot less hassle), but i dont think they can say they DONT support MACs... they probably just dont know how to set them up. If you are some what computer savy you will be amazed at how little the tech ppl at the ISPs or around the island know... (however the TECHs at AUC are pretty knowledgable, and they usually help you with whatever problems you are trying to solve, especially since you are a MAC user... i think i pretty much got all the basics for the techs here solved)
feel free to drop me a PM if you have any questions... hope that helps

Does someone down there have a copy of Virtual PC we can install? Or do we need to purcahse it?

Macs are great. They don't get all bogged down with software cause there isn't anything to run on them. Love my dual Xeon. Will render video as well as any mac...:p

Microsoft is crap... when macs move to intel next year and release OSX for x86... WinXP is gonna be in a world of hurtin (yea yea you have to buy mac hardware to run it, but you know someone is gonna modify/hack that)
i so dont miss having to reformat every couple of months

Nah, Microsoft owns part of Apple anyways! Macs are for girls and ipod and ipod accessories.

Any mac.. I'll pit my ibook 800mhz against your dual xeon. Sure, you might render faster but you'll also crash faster too. See Tortise and Hare.

As mention by me in the Who thread.
goto Virtualapple.com to play apple games such as Oregon trail and others for free. It is a activex emulator that will run Apple II software(which you can download from the site as well). I died of cholera near Idaho :(

From what I've read, Mac OSX is rated the best consumer operating system on the planet. It has all the stability of unix/linux, with an absolutely gorgeous GUI (Aqua).
I have a PC w/ WinXP and a little iBook I play around on. IMHO, Mac OSX is infinitely better than WinXP. Everything "just works." I've never had a crash. Everything is so simple. You download a program, and it's all contained in a little disk image. You have little folders for Documents, Pictures, Movies, etc. WinXP has similar, but it just makes more sense on Mac OSX.

So, sorry to distract (or at least attempt to distract) the conversation away from which OS is better (macs, of course), but I can't seem to get my computer to see the school's wireless network. That is, when I am in the computer lab itself, I get maybe one bar, if I am lucky. I get nothing in the library, cafeteria, etc. I tried reseating the wireless card, but that did not help at all. Any suggestions? I would very much appreciate the help. Should I look for an external wireless card to hook into my USB? My current wireless card is a new airport extreme. I would think it would work. Please help...
Thanks.

odd... I never had problems with my mac at AUC. Are u sure you are using the right wireless network? Maybe you haven't updated the airport to a new driver(but that still shouldn't give u low signal strength).
Try this... see if it will help out

USB wifi doesn't go well with Apple iBooks... I haven't looked recently but the only one that half worked was one by d-link. It was crap though so I wouldn't buy it unless they got around to updating their drivers as it always crashed on me.
