anybody have t-mobile? On the website, it says that it has a "High" Level of coverage on the island. With "World Class International Roaming" it would be $1.39 a minute..... bahhh! too expensive... What are my other options in calling home with my cell phone? How does unlocking my phone work? is it just for local calls on the island or internationally... oy vey, i technology...

I don't know specifically about your T-Mobile. I just got a cheap phone here on the island that serves me well.

If you're looking for more information.. hit that search button on the top of the page. Then hit the "advanced" option. Fill in the parameters and you'll get loads of information about cell phones!

When I first came to the island last April, I used my T-Mobile to call home 2 or 3 times before canceling it, but it worked fine during those times. I had to, however, go to the Maho area as it received signal only in that area.

I have TMobile phone that I use for both SXM and the states. What I do is switch the simcards within the phone. The simcards here cost $10, and you will be on a local plan, this way you dont have to buy any phones.

Unlocking your phone will be free if you call up TMobile tech support and request it provided you have had their service for more than a year, if not, come down to the island to have Devcom unlock it for you for $20; without unlocking your GSM phone you cannot put in another country's simcard. His office is next to TelCel in simpson bay.

We were just in SXM visiting our AUC son...we used our T-Mobile phones. We called T-mobile before leaving to get the phones unlocked. They worked pretty well most everywhere except some areas of the French side. But they advertise $1.49/ min on SXM....we thought we were ok with that since we weren't going to be making that many calls and I made sure every call was under 1 min....BUT when we got home, and our bill came, EVERY call was listed at 2 minutes...even the ones where there had been NO answer! So EVERY call on the island to our son or from him was at least $3.00!! We called T-mobile...they said they couldn't change the rate we were charged but they are giving some extra "free minutes" for the next 3 months...that is no big deal to us because we never use all of our minutes anyway. So just beware....the $1.49 is a lie and they are ripping us off.

hmmmmm.... those sneaky T-mobile people....

so how does this sound in regards to using my cell phone..
unlock it, do the whole switch SIM card thing so that i can use my phone locally and back in the states.....

rely on calling cards to call parents?

is the telephone service for the dorms good?

yeah... you're gonna have to use cards4students via SXM simcard, or you can try free services online like skype.
sorry but there is no landline service in the dorms, unless you want to pay $1500! The RJ11 jacks are only used for DSL.
