Hello,

Would anyone let me know what life in University of Sto. Tomas would be for a med student? Are they really into the pure PBL? How much do you expect to pay for an apartment monthly? Thanks! :D

im a graduate from UST batch 2002..im here in States already..life in UST as a MEDICAL STUDENT was an excellent one specifically i was trained to study hard because it's really hard to maintaine a passing rate out there, however, Attendings/Consultants, who were really knowledgeable, there really taught their students how to think/analyze concepts etc..there was a time during my 3rd year when they switched to PBL w/c DID NOT do good w/ the school performance in our Philippine Medical Boards. Now they went back to 'traditional way' of teaching medicine.;)

UST rocks!!!

Good teachers, good reputation. Every program I went to in the U.S. (for residency or fellowship or job interview) knows UST because of its quality graduates. A lot of graduates are also in private practice or in the academe in the U.S.

As of schoolyear 2005-2006, they are back to doing the traditional way of teaching. No PBL in the meantime.

i myself, is currently a freshman of UST Med.. well all i can say that it's fun and interesting! toxic too. hehe they have good teachers, as of our batch and last yr , i think they call it "Integrated learning" which is a mix of traditional classroom lectures and PBL. We have this "small group discussions" where we are given cases/ topics to discuss.

hi. i know i may be getting ahead of myself but my daughter is already in 3rd year high school. she wants to take up medicine and after much deliberation, we all decided to let her take up medical technology. now i found out med tech is not offered at de la salle. we are residents of imus, cavite and de la salle is the closest option that we have because she is only 14 years old. i have been hearing that up, ust, and even feu as the best (some say the only) options if you really want quality education in that field.

i could really use your insight because i really don't know what other options we have. is de la salle dasma ok? i am hoping to receive objective opinions about the different schools around metro manila and i could sure use your help. would her chances of getting into a good medical school be lessened by the pre-med course and college she attends? what other course would you suggest she take to prepare her for med school?

thank you very much in advance.

As far as I know, the first class that used PBL exclusively just took the boards last year, and UST had several graduates in the top ten. However, like MaLt- said, UST uses integrated learning now. It is a mix of classroom lectures and small group discussions where we are given different cases and topics to discuss, which means long hours every day. It's a good time though. :)

As far as apartments and housing goes, you'd have to check out the housing around campus and ask the people in charge, the cost depends on how many people you live with, how big the room is, etc.

It is my understanding that UERM has been successfully practicing problem based learning (PBL). I did hear that UST tried PBL but did not seem to work out well for them. I guess its good to stick with what you know best. All Filipino doctors I have met appear very capable - UP, UE, UST, Cebu grads....

Life in the Philippines is great!!!
