are the basic science exams at smu all application type questions, like things never directly encountered before in lectures and labs, or are they mostly based directly from the class notes and what the prof. says?

What's up miasma,
You learn a ton of information in histo/cell, anatomy and embryology. I'm a first semester student a week away from my first exams. But I do know that most of the things you learn in your courses will be applied in a CLINICAL setting on your exams. Labs are the exception. They will be mostly, but not limited to, identification.
For instance you may be given a situation where someone breaks the neck of the humerous. You then may be asked to select which nerve or blood vessel may be in danger due to this break.
This is a VERY general example, but you get the idea.
When studying the information, there will be lots of clinical examples of the ideas your learning. But to answer the second part of your question, you MUST know the profs slides, AND the clinical ideas involved with them.
What I'm saying is, you'll learn tons in your classes, but you MUST know how to apply it as a clinician.
Hope this helps...gota run! Take care.
