no chance with this storm. Will mainly fizzle out over the mountainous terrain of central america. We wil probably get some good rain and some wind if it keeps on its current track. I guess we shall see.

If in the case of evacuation to the States, isn’t it hard to reserve the flight? Guess everyone wants to fly back and situation should be chaos. Is there any safe place to evacuate in Cayman; I mean any official place offered by Cayman government?

According to Joe Smith on Channel 9 in Orlando this morning, Adrian is not even expected to be organized by the time it gets to Cayman, if it even keeps heading in that direction.

Now speaking as a Hugo, Charlie, Frances, and Jean veteran, I can say that Ivan was the most powerful hurricane I think we have seen since Andrew hit Miami. It is recorded as being the 6th most intense Atlantic Hurricane on record, with sustained winds when it passed over Cayman of 165mph. There were reports from various observation stations of sustained winds in excess of 200 miles an hour. We knew it was going to be very bad, which is why we went ahead and evacuated last year.

It would take something on the order of another Ivan to cause us to evacuate again, at least until the new campus buildings are complete. Ivan was the first major hurricane to hit Cayman in nearly 40 years. Does that mean it won't happen this year? No, but the chances are slim. We have contingency plans in place, as we always do, but there's a very good probability we won't need them for a while.

Just a few weeks before Ivan hit, Charley brushed Cayman. From what I have heard, there were some stiff breezes and a little rain (this is the same storm that gave many of us in the Oviedo office unexpected skylights in our homes). This illustrates that not only does a hurricane have to be powerful, the eye has to pass close enough to GC to casue problems.

I'm sorry calkmb, I didn't see your post. You must have posted while I was typing.

There are many Cayman designated shelters. We had chartered planes for the students (I think we only ended up utilizing part of one, however) to avoid the issue of ticket availability.
