Can anyone tell me how the masters program work? How long does it take to complete and is it competitive to get in? It seems so stressful to be taking md classes and also extra classes for your masters all at the same time.

Hello gwl,

The masters classes are designed to run with your medical classes. You take two additional classes along with your basic sciences which consists of 3 semesters in Cayman, then 2 semesters in Maine. The easiest masters classes are taught in the beginning of the program. The hardest classes would be while your in Maine while you take easier basic sciences.
The classes involve a lot of group work, writing, and class presentations.
I would suggest finding people that will work hard to be part of your group. That way you can split the individual projects among yourselves. In that way, you can concentrate more on your sciences. The classes are not difficult but researching/writing papers can be time consuming.
PM if u have any questions.

What percentage of the students at SMU are in the Masters program?

Lately I've been considering the Masters program, but I don't see why I would do it. Is it benefical when it comes to the MATCH?

Opinions, please!

I'm currently in the MD/Master's program here at SMU.

The extra degree in MSHSA will not help when it comes to the MATCH. Your USMLE Step I scores will ultimately be the deciding factor on which program you place into for Residency.

However, the degree will help in your practice as it adequately prepares you to run an efficient and productive Medical Practice.

Good luck!

I am currently doing the MD/MHSA program. I believe about 75% of my class is taking part in this program.

To be honest most people do it for 2 reasons:

(1) Knowledge and better preperatiion when they open up their practice

(2) To get back to Maine faster.

Either way the class is fairly helpful.

Good luck...

I would say that most people do it to get back to the states. If that is your motive wait until the third semster to do it. You have to stay n Cayman for three semesters and then if you are in the masters program you head to maine for 4th and 5th

Yeah, I'll admit coming back to the the US was one of my chief reasons for the MHSA option. Then I realized: I reside in Florida and the Caymans are like friggin' 2000 miles closer to home than Maine! That's alright...I've been in the tropics for 10 years, I need to freeze my A** off for a while. Additionally, I've heard that sub-zero temperatures help one to stay more alert.
