From social work to SGU???

Hello to all!!

Alright ladies and gentelman, this one is a doozie. I am a master's student at Tulane University studying social work. I will be finished in December and I have a delimma. Because of procrastination, I failed to fill out the necessary papers for the MSW/MPH program here. Since I only have 8 months left in this program, it is impossible for me to enter now. I am sold on SGU, but I fear that I may not have the necessary requirements as I have a bachelor's and will have a masters in the social work dicipline only. Any advice? Also, how hard would it be for me to enter premed having only taken one year of biology and biology labs, two years of mathmatics, two years of descriptive statistics, and NO organic chemistry classes?

SGU looks at the whole person and the whole package.

as far as premed goes...if you get accepted to the premed prog. you would get placed into whatever year you would need to meet the necessary requirements.

Now I must warn you. I am like a cat.....when you feed me, I ALWAYS return. Here are two new questions:
1. How much of a task will it be to get a FULL financial aid package
and
2. Are there any employment opportunities on the island for SGU graduates that are not citizens, but want to be?

fin. aid. shouldnt be a problem. if you want less hassle then apply with edinvest, the one that SGU refers u to. but u can find others too just lot more hassle and paper works.

im not sure if i understood your 2nd question...if you are asking for work opp. yes. contact the DES office..they usually have some.

do they allow med students to work while in school? i thought it was considered a full time job and you couldnt work unless you were TAing or something....i mean, i dont know for sure, i had just always thought that..

You can work for DES (Dept of Educational Services) running a weekly review session for classes that you have done well in, as well as histology/anatomy lab teaching assistants, work as an RA or Physician Extender (on-campus EMS).

You can not have an actual 9-5 job, only things that require a few hours a week.

Let me be specific in my question:

I am currently in an advanced graduate program where I complete 15 hours plus 27 hours of work study a semester for four semesters. If I am allowed to enter the MPH program at SGU, that program is also a 1 year program. There are plenty of people in my current program that have full-time jobs in addition to their full load of classes. It is almost impossible to survive without one unless you are married and being taken care of, or you are recieving refund checks and living off of them. I have neither. My question is: are there any employment opportunities for MPH students?

right, i think there ARE employment opportunities, but NOT full time jobs. you can only work a few hours, basically enough to maybe pay for 1/4 of your monthly groceries, not really a lot of money. i DES and i lab TA, and it comes out to about $150EC a month....soooo, you can't really support yourself with the money. maybe rules for MPH are different, i dont know, but in the med school you can only work these DES/TA hours, which are pretty much only enough for drinking money.
