a recent ross grad came in to do a guest presentation on some icm crap.
he said that the gpa we get in M1 and M2 doesn't really matter.
Now that's not completely true, is it? especially for people who want to go into anesthesia, radiology, or any non-primary care field eh?

In the grand scheme of things? Not really. Board Scores, Letters, Research and who you know or do matter a great deal more.
I guess maybe because they don't "trust" Caribbean grading? Who knows.
But frm what I've been told, board scores is number one and only superceded if you're chummy with someone powerful.

In my opinion, your GPA can only hurt you and not help you. This is because of prob how grading at caribbean schools might be viewed. If you got straight A's the perception is well "its prob due to lax grading policy" but if you have a crappy GPA then this is a major red flag to program directors. The only objective standard of comparison residency directors have to compare us to the US students is our board scores. This is why its sooo important to do well on the Steps!!
My GPA was pretty good, but do you think I was asked about that at any interview? NO way! All that my interviewers wanted to discuss was my personal statement and board scores. Just to give you an idea. Hope this helps.

I dont knwo if its just becuase Ross is a caribbean school. I'm pretty sure that the grading conventions, when compared across all the med schools in the US, are nowhere near standardized. For various reasons, a student who scored extremely well in M1/M2 at Harvard could have done horribly or average at Ross. There are so many factors involved. Boards scores focus things a bit more, and are more standardly applied, even though there are still factors that can muck things up. but there are a bunch of residency programs that really do take into consideration WHO you are and WHAT type of person you are. There are people out there who have fabulous scores but are HORRIBLE people to talk to. The programs that had bad experiences with these types of people will be sensitive to that and will change the way they evaluate a possible residency candidate. Good luck.
