I just got my "financial aid awards" by email. I am a little worried about about how much they left me for everyday expenditures like food. Can any current students give a figure of about how much they spend per month on food and what their eating habits are like?
Thanks

I buy most of my food at the grocery store, and cook it myself. Eating out about once a week. My credit card statements for the last 3 months say I have spent:
$319.04
$380.54
$354.54
at the grocery store. I am somewhat indiscriminate in my shopping, and I buy mostly pre-packaged, imported American food at the more expensive grocery store, like most students. It is possible to save some money if you buy more local stuff, if you actually know how to cook.
I think the budget gives you $125/week for food, plus $50/week for "miscellaneous," so that's $700/month, which is double my spending habits.

Just curious what is it that you are eating, or what is available to eat. I know there is a subway and kfc, but are you eating local food, and what exactly is that comprised of besides fish and chicken?

I'm getting by on about 400 US a month (assuming each day i spend 20 ec for dinner 10 ec for lunch and 5 ec for breakfast). I forget to eat now and again but i'll usually make up for it by dropping 80 EC on sushi.
I find i usually eat from subway now and again, 1-2 times a week on campus, at the ladies on grand anse once a week, a couple times a week at la boulangerie, Grillmaster is pretty good, Nick's is the place to go for lunch. Local food includes fish, chicken, Roti (dont know if its local but everyone sells it), lambie, turtle. some local meals will come with rice and vegetables and some meat. and according to our parasit professor, theres a good chance your meal will come with a side order of infectious protozoa.

Babu recommends Miss Patel's samosa's for lunch.
They are berry delicious, especially with some chutney on the side.

I think a good guide is $10-$15 EC for lunch and $20-30EC for dinner (about $6-10 and $15-20 US dollars respectively). I don't eat breakfast or snack much. I've also lost about 25 pounds

Even though I live off campus, I would still come in during the weekend to get some scrambled eggs (guilty pleasure).
Of course, ever since I discovered some hair with my eggs (or is it eggs with some hair?), I have stopped.
Can't beat home cooking as my mother always says.
