i got my housing assignment today. aside from my roommate's info, all it says is that i'm in the "New Dorm." i'm guessing that's one of the dorms on true blue? can anyone tell me anything about it? does it have wireless access? what kind of electrical sockets? will i have to get transformers/adapters? is there anything i should know about it? thanks.

i am assuming thats the dorm that is still being built. so to answer ur question...noone will know. teh dorm doesnt even "exist" yet. but its right next to SD2. all i see is a big hole in the ground and a little shack next to the hole.

No, I got "New Dorm" as well last year when I was in SD2. It just means one of the Superdorms (1 or 2, I doubt 4 will be ready.)
1) Wireless access upstairs in study room
2) Both 220 and 110V plugs, so you won't need a converter, but if you want power in the bathroom, or 110V in the kitchen, you need an extension cord.
Lots more information on this site, just do a search for superdorm.

Superdorm 4 will not be ready for use by August, but will likely be ready be ready sometime during the term. I think the estimate is October.

really? ppl told me it will e ready by august. i was gonna put a bet on it that it wouldnt. maybe i should do the bet with my friend...however if i lose i have to wear a skirt around campus for 1 day...so if you see a chinese guy walking on campus sometime in august, you know i lost the bet and you know my identity.

Anyone remember that painted-over sign on SD3 when they were still constructing it? "To be complete 2002", yet it was 2004...

thanks for your responses guys. i guess i just needed someone to clarify what "new dorm" meant. i thought it would be the dorm being built as well, but when i visited the campus in march, it didn't look like it would be anywhere near finished by august, thus my confusion. i'm pretty familiar with the existing superdorms, so if that's what "new dorm" meant, then i'm set. thanks!

maybe new dorm means sd3? but I guess it could be sd 1 or 2 also......
does anyone know what is being built on the parking lot site? security told me not to park there this week, and I noticed they started digging there soonafter.

Maybe finally fixing that 3 foot drop at the entrance?
Most likely SD1 or 2- if you look at the housing assignments from the lottery, there are only 8 people living in SD 1 and no upperclassmen assigned to SD2, so they will be full of first termers. SD3 is looking pretty full of upperclassmen.

So, the new dorm rooms don't have internet access? Do any of the dorm bedrooms have internet access?

are there wired connections in the dorm rooms, or is there no way to access the internet at all from your room?

If you want internet in your dorm room you need to order it on your own, and in order to do this you need to get a phone line.
internet is fairly pricey on the island - although it works out okay if you split it with a few people and use a wireless router.

You can get free wireless of off the school's network in your room in some of the rooms on the second floor, on the side of the study rooms.
All of the rooms are theoretically wired for ethernet connections, the only problem is the contractor that built the dorms put the sensative network switching equipment in the high humidity laundry rooms. IT has been promising to fix this for years, but so far, no go.
I have internet in my room because I am sharing a DSL line over a wireless router with the people 1 floor above me, like Silenthunder said.

wait..how does that work emt? get a wireless router and it routed to ur computer?
emt036

Yeah, hook up the DSL modem to the wireless access point/router. The router will give the connected computers a local IP address, and route all internet data packets to the correct computer. If you are planning on doing P2P stuff, then you will also want to port forward the appropriate ports. Put a WEP (encryption) password on it, as well as only allow the MAC addresses of your friend's/roomates computers to connect. That way people who aren't paying for the internet can't use it.

they are still trying to get all the upperclassmen on the waiting list a shot on campus housing. i think the deadline to either accept or decline an offer from the waiting list is today. so hoepfully the housing office will get to the 1st termers soon.
