I have been accepted to the MPH program at SGU, and if i complete it with 3.5 i will go on to the MD program a year later. My question is whether i should attend the MPH program (40,000 dollars plus a year earning power, time wasted) or attend another reputable carribean school such as AUC ROSS or SABA right away? im leaning towards AUC.

Julian187:

Before an answer can be given, have n you been accepted at any of the threeschools that you mentioned. If not you currently don't have any choice and you are assuming you will be accepted at the other three schools!!

I am here at SGU and I love it. I am also one of those who seems to be in the minority in that I absolutely love Grenada. My wife and I really love being here. That being said, AUC will also get you into a residency. And it will do it quicker. If you want something like IM, FP, surgery or psych or something, go to AUC and get started. That's just my opinion, and I know that others will differ. Good luck

Andy,
do you mean that SGU don't match well in surgery? that's what I am heading for!

Definately go to AUC, or Ross. There is no point to do an extra year. It would make sense to me to take a year off to try to get into a US Allopathic school, but for SGU, c'mon.

Don't know where you got that. Lots of surgery here:

No, SGU places well in Surgery. WHat I meant was that AUC also has a decent track record with surgery, so you could start earlier at AUC and stil get into a sur residency (assuming garades/board scores/attitude).

I agree with the above. I always say the same thing. If you are using MPH as an avenue to get into SGU and you have gotten into another school its not worth it financial speaking. If you are not going to utilize the degree in any way then its also not worth it. Ross and Saba will get you into a residency as well. If you do a search there are numerous threads on mph or other carib schools. Any of the schools will get you there. What you have to look at is the campus, step 1 and 2 pass rates, attrition rates, residency placements (if you want cali and students from one school dont get cali then well you hav to make a decision), life on the island, etc...

Surgery got pretty competitive this year. Lots of good people went unmatched. Only about 200 FMGs got surgery there are about 1000 total spots for categorical surgery.

I just got back from being out of the country and still am jet lagged or else I would have done a search and put some links. Sorry...
